Seaweeds growers from all over Central Visayas trooped to Cuaming Island in Inabanga Friday to learn updates in the industry during their quarterly meeting.

Dr. Allan Poquita Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Assistant Region 7 Director told the members of the Central VIsayas Seaweeds Growers Association (CVSGA) officers that seaweeds farming is now a blooming industry.

“It has become more important to our economy as it gives more profitable income to the fisher folk,” he said.

For his part, BFAR 7 chief of the Extension Services Division and concurrent CVSGA adviser Tiburcio Donaire said innovations are being made to traditional seaweed farming to improve production.

Cuaming Barangay Captain Rogelio Angco welcomed the resource speakers, BFAR staff, provincial fishery officers and participants to the island – the first time that the barangay has hosted a regional meeting of such scope.

CVSGA president Ronald Carcellar steered the discussion to tackle issues and concerns felt in each province as well as the common interest to buy a moisture content analyzer, status of production by province and updates on their Constitution and by-laws on top of the regular agenda.

Common problems like siltation that affects seaweeds growth, infestation of siganid that causes the “ice-ice” disease, occurrence of typhoon that wash out plantations and prices which are being controlled by middlemen, among others, were the subjects of healthy discussions. The members shared mitigating measures and best practices.

“This is one way to promote and encourage the villagers of Cuaming to plant seaweeds as well as identify best practices here that we can replicate in our communities,” Carcellar said.

Cuaming is a recipient of a seaweeds input assisted project from BFAR.  - Sunday Post

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
