Product Development in Inabanga, Bohol
« on: November 12, 2007, 07:39:37 AM »
Inabanga does not live by saguran alone. Well, not anymore.

For today, the loomweavers of raffia or the dried shoots of the palm locally known as buli, or buri in other dialects continue the product development (prodev) process. The development is not only in proper stripping and drying of the raw material or the mastery in weaving but in dyeing to create a whole line of products that personifies "a burst into a kaleidoscope of colors."

Dyeing is technical: the exact tint or hue can be replicated for the next several batches as ordered by following a formula. But color combination and design are an art - especially the combination of complementary colors and design introduced into the loom.

The continued product development aims to maintain Inabanga's hold to the claim of top quality weaving and creations from the dyed raffia like bags and pillow cases, among others, in addition to the usual table runners, placemats, decorative rolls and wall decors.

As such, local weavers including Dr. Mariel Abisado, One Town One Product (OTOP) Center Manager, underwent a training-workshop conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)'s Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) of General Santos Avenue, Bicutan Taguig City.

Thelma Sipin of DOST-PTRI and Jenice Pagkalinawan demonstrated Natural Dye Extraction and Textile Application Technology, particularly developing bleaches from organic plants like cogon, talisay, atsuete, ginger, coconut husk and tungog.

Colors available so far are blue, yellow, black, orange, brown and others.

On the last day of the workshop, Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy distribute certificates of recognition to the "graduates." Vice Mayor Wenceslao Lao, Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Amormeo Dela Torre and Abisado assisted him.

Jumamoy asked the participants to add to their backyard gardens. With no need to buy dyes because of the availability of the said plants - poverty has been reduced.
