Learn Deep Sea Guso Farming in Inabanga

Islander of Hambongan off Inabanga town have finally tasted the fruits of their labor when they harvested for the first time Tuesday the mature Eucheuma seaweeds locally known as guso - planted and cultured in deep seawaters.

Until the technology was introduced to Bohol, seaweeds farmers planted guso in shallow waters that made them vulnerable to disease aggravated by the flow of the tide and alternate excessive heat during the day and extreme cold late at night and towards dawn.

Stark neediness suffered by some of his constituents prompted Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy to find poverty reduction programs applicable in the islands - among them deep sea guso farming funded with a grant from the municipal government.

Municipal Councilors Amormeo de la Torre, and Nolasco Salazar, Fe Curato and Fisheries Sector Chief Madelone Rengel of the Provincial Agriculturist's Office, Coordinator Beato Hinaloc of the Regional Fishery Training Center (RFTC), Municipal Agriculture Officer Leocadio Torregosa and coastal community organizers witnessed the harvest.

The seaweeds mature in 45 days so that if the farmers plant their staked areas on a staggered basis, they can harvest one area after another, hence, "continuously."
