Press Release: EARTH HOUR PHILIPPINES 2009 GOES NATIONWIDE

Filipinos urged to switch off lights 8:30-9:30pm on March 28

The lights will go off one hour on March 28, starting at 8:30 pm in key cities in the Philippines and all over the world. This is called Earth Hour. The lights-out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city environmental campaign, has evolved into a grassroots that has attracted worldwide attention. In 2008 371 cities across 35 countries turned their lights out in a united call for action on climate change and energy conservation.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in joining hands the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Green Army Philippines Network to spread public awareness of the Earth Hour message to cities and communities all over the country.

“2009 is a destiny year for the entire planet,” declared Lory Tan, President and CEO of WWF-Philippines. “This is the year that we decide the future of humanity. Earth Hour is a message of hope and action and we hope it sends a powerful message to both local and world leaders. It is a global movement that proves that each one of us can make a difference. Imagine what we can do if we act together.”

Recognizing the vital role of the energy community- particularly in terms of sustainable electric power generation, clean transport fuels, and best energy practices across sectors – DOE Secretary Angelo T. Reyes expressed full support for Earth Hour. “ This grassroots initiative is an opportunity for individuals from all corners of the globe to unite and, in a single voice, make it known that their collective action can correct the precarious trajectory of the planet,” he said. “ This is a cause that should unite us as Filipinos and as a citizens of the world.

To build on the powerful symbolic value of Earth Hour, Secretary Reyes explained that top-tier corporate sponsorships by national partners will be linked to initiatives to the SWITCH Movement, the social mobilization platform or multi-sector energy stakeholders spawned by the 2008 Philippines Energy Summit. These initiatives cover community-level switches to efficient lighting; cleaner transport fuels and technologies for jeepneys and tricycles; and area-based renewable energy (RE) groundwork-setting and promotion.

“We are positioning Earth Hour 2009 among potential national partners not as a one-time event but as window to longer-term involvement in climate change response and sustainable energy programs,” he said.” Through this alignment with SWITCH, we have the opportunity to use the switch-off as a springboard to highlight the urgent for dramatic lifestyle changes and best energy practices to save our planet.”

“We fully support Earth Hour 2009. And urge companies, non-governmental organizations and communities in our network to take advantage of this opportunity to promote more efficient energy practices and technologies,” remarked Francis Chua, Chairman of the Green Army.

Last year, Earth Hour savings of 56 MWH of electric power in Luzon and 16 MWH in Metro Manila, equivalent to the output of a small coal-fired power plant. An estimated one million Filipinos were involved. Over 400 establishments participated by turning off their signs and non-essential lights. In Manila, Roxas Boulevard became the focal point of the celebration since it cuts across the cities of Manila, Pasay, and Parañaque, but Quezon City, Makati, and Mandaluyong also joined in the energy efficiency-promoting activity.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach one billion people in 1,000 cities all over the world. To help reach this goal, a global sign-up campaign and competition is again being launched worldwide. Last year, the Philippines ranked 9 th in terms of total sign-ups. All Filipinos are urged to sign up at Earth Hour’s global website: Earth Hour Philippines 2009 hopes to involve 10 million Filipinos and 500 businesses in key cities across the country.

To receive news updates and event schedules, one can register one’s cellphone number by sending the following message to 5777 for both Smart and Globe users: green <space> reg <space> firstname <slash> lastname. Example: green reg Juan/C/De la Cruz.

WWF, the DOE, the Green Army, and the SWITCH movement are inviting all public and private sector groups to take part in this year’s Earth Hour. “Efficiency in energy use in the light of global warming is as issue that cuts across all sectors,” Sec. Reyes stressed. He pointed out recent developments in the energy sector such as the passage of the Renewal Energy Act that should facilitate a shift to “green” energy technologies. “This should encourage power companies to now use the wind, the sun, and the ocean waves to generate our electricity.”

“Though Earth Hour 2009, we hope to send a powerful message to world leaders in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009,” WWF’s Lory Tan said. “We need a commitment to actions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the short- and long term benefit of the planet in order to avert widespread disastrous impacts, especially in developing countries like the Philippines.”

Taking the first step is as easy as turning off a light.

How to save our mother earth from global warming84

The biggest challenge that mankind is facing in this century is "global warming" and there is a "global warning" given by scientist to save our earth. It has become a big cry from every corner of the world "How to save our mother earth from global warming", every nation, every forums, every where and in every thing they discuss about this global warming and how to save our earth from this biggest threat. Scientists had laid down the root cause for this situation as the increase in the amount of carbon DI oxide let out on the atmosphere by our industries and automobiles. If this is going to continue we may loose our land to oceans and the indifferent climate conditions may also lead to new unknown diseases, which may challenge the medical world. Now it self we have started to feel the impact of this global warming. It is not an issue with the scientists alone, every individual can join hands in this global mission on "How to save our mother earth from global warming", and i have listed something below.

1.Automobiles stay ahead of everything in the emission of carbon, so as for as possible try to avoid using your automobile for short distances.

2.Instead of everybody using their own vehicle if some of you are working in the same area and living in the same area you can share one vehicle.

3.Now everything can be done through net instead of going to the banks, stations, markets and etc you can do the same by sitting at your home in front of your system.

4. You can reduce the usage of your refrigerator, If you think that how much my refrigerator is going stand as a cause, don't see as one refrigerator of your home count the no of refrigerators around the world in each home and shops, Hotels etc,.

5.Start using the recycle base articles, change from plastic to paper.

6.We can change ourselves to use cotton cloths than silk rayon cloths.

7.As much as possible use cotton bags or paper bags than plastic bags.

8.Instead of searching for a solution how to destroy the used batteries, start using rechargeable batteries.

9.The waste water that is been let out in the process of leather tanning process spoils the soil and its fertility either we should reuse the water through water treatment plants or we should avoid using leather articles.

10.Let us avoid use and throw articles in our daily uses because almost 90 percent of these kind of articles are being made of plastics.

11.Let us grow at least a tree in every house.

12.To stop the forests getting destroyed, the heart of mother nature you can simply avoid using wooden articles.

13. Attend all your vehicles schedule check ups without fail, to Keep your vehicles in good condition and intact .

14.Give special attention to the carburetor, and silencer of your vehicle.

15.Scientists say even the chemicals used for domestic cleaning also destroys the atmosphere since use soda, lemon and vinegar instead of the chemicals.

We can teach our children how to love nature and how important it is to safeguard the world.Instead of keeping them a big asset it is very important for us to keep a wonderful natural and healthy world for them to enjoy their life. It is-true improvements is unavoidable but we can avoid destroying the earth for it is not our permanent property for us to enjoy on our own as we wish. we are only sharing and it should handed over to the following generation with the same way how we got it from our predecessor.

I also welcome more ideas that we can share to join hands in this mission.

When the whole world is searching for new ways and means to fight global warming, an Indian agricultural scientist, Dr. N. Bharathi, said bamboo was a practical atmospheric carbon absorbing plant. He added, " It is the fastest and least expensive way to solve the problems of carbon-dioxide emission and water pollution."

Bamboo absorbs carbon-dioxide and releases oxygen into the atmosphere three to four times higher than many other trees. Bamboo also enriches the soil naturally and prevents soil erosion and effectively cleans the water pollution of of the septic tank discharge and factory effluent by its natural affinity for nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals. One mature Bheema Bamboo (Bambusa Balocava) would absorb above 500 kgs of carbon-dioxide.

A few more:

With the number of natural disasters growing high everyday, it is almost as if the earth is crying out loud for our help. Statistics have put an eight year timer on the time - bomb that is now our planet.

Become a part of your school, college, office, or your residential area's environment clubs. Participate in activities to clean up the city you live in.

Garbage lying around begins to ro6t and plays a huge role in polluting the soil, air and water the very basic essentials that we require to live. Picking up garbage and throwing it in dustbins is a great way to start living clean. Try to composite kitchen waste and other organic wastes. This composite is also a great fertilizer and it helps reduce the amount of trash that you send to your local garbage dump.

Follow this three important three green rules:

1. Reduce 2. Reuse and 3. Recycle

Follow this three rules strictly so that you can reduce the amount of waste by knowing which items are recyclable. For example, cardboard, paper and glass are all recyclable materials, and once they have been recycled, they can be reused.

Use cloth bags or jute bags to carry groceries or other items. Stop immediately using paper or plastic bags or materials that cannot be recycled. If you are made to use paper or plastic bags, ensure that you get them recycled so that they can be reused.

When on market, look for the three arrows that make a circle denoting recyclable material. That way you know the products which you are buying can be recycled and will help protect the environment.

Climate change is mainly brought about by the release of toxic green house gases like carbon dioxide into the air. The best way to reduce this greenhouse gases is to grow more trees which use these gases for their food making process. Plant fresh saplings in your park, office, school, college, or your garden and if possible make a community planting by joining hands with your friends, family and your neighbours. Help the earth, breathe.

Vehicular pollution is the most major cause of air pollution in big cities. While no one is saying stop driving cars, but you can be smart about it.

Walk or use public transport whenever you are going to a nearby place or to office. Carpooling, or even riding a bicycle is a great way to cut down both fuel costs and usage and pollution and also help you keep fit.

If you aren't using electrical appliances switch them off. Leaving them on only contributes to the loss of more and more precious fuel resources.

Don't use more water than you need, and now that the rainy season on the corner adopt rain water harvesting to help raise ground water levels.

Can we justify to destroy such a beauty - think

Global warming is the most serious threat the world faces today.

The warning signs are present , even here in the Philippines . Drought is felt during the rainy season and typhoons strike in the summer months. Sea water level is on the rise and more areas experience flooding . These are only some of the symptoms of a serious and growing global phenomenon: climate change. This environmental crisis puts the lives of millions at risk, hitting the poor countries hardest.

In response to the call for environmental awareness, GMA Public Affairs presents Signos (Fatal Signs), Philippine television’s first full-length documentary on what is considered the most pressing environmental issue today – the world’s changing climate as a result of decades of unchecked human activity. Following in the tradition of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth", Signos aims to bring the concept closer to home through a nation-wide investigation of the manifestations of climate change.

Award-winning journalists, Howie Severino, Maki Pulido and Raffy Tima travel to different parts of the country to prove that the impact of climate change reaches far beyond the glaciers of the Polar Regions. Severino visits Bicol, where a 150-meter fault line and intensifying typhoons threaten to bury towns with landslides. Pulido discovers a town in La Union that has dwindled to more than half of its original size. In El Nido, Palawan, Tima ventures underwater to investigate a phenomenon called coral bleaching.

To provide the most in-depth report, Signos brings together scientists from local and international institutions, including Filipino NASA Senior Research Scientist and Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Josefino Comiso, and experts from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Marine Science Institute, Greenpeace, and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), and other climate change experts. Signos brings Filipino viewers a comprehensive look on climate change, its causes, effects, and the measures that must be taken to prevent its disastrous consequences.

Narrated by Greenpeace advocate, Richard Guttierez, Signos airs April 20, after Ful Haus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
