The Churches In The Ukraine
« on: June 22, 2010, 02:12:47 PM »
During my semester abroad in my sophomore year in college, I took a personal pilgrimage to the Orthodox and Catholic Orthodox Churches in Kiev, Ukraine. Some of the said churches were over 1000 years old, some dating back to the influence of the Byzantine Empire, which sent orthodox missionary priests to establish the Orthodox Christian Faith in what is now present day The Ukraine (Kievan Russ, as it was once called).

The following videos that I will post are part of my pilgrimage and visitations to the many churches, cathdrals, and monasteries.
It was a beautiful and spiritual experience for me. Very eye-opening, in the spiritual and religious sense.

Let's go back to June 2006.

The Ancient Cave Monastery in Kiev, The Ukraine.
Pilgrimage to the old Orthodox Church (this church was considered part of the Roman Catholic Church, as it was built before the Great Schism)

Beautiful.

This was taken inside the old Catholic Orthodox Monastery which was built in the 12th century. Everything inside the monastery is original and the old paintings and the crucifixes are original and have survived Soviet Athiesm, which threatened to burn and destroy the holy relics, but were saved by faithful Ukrainians and Russians.

Upon entering this monastery, I was filled with unexplainable euphoric joy. This was, indeed, a Holy place. Underneath this are the sarcophagus of Orthodox saints, whose bodies have remained untouched by time.

I was originally not allowed to film, but after asking permission from one of the monks and fathers, was given special permission.
Thanks be to God.

Outside the monastery grounds. There were many other pilgrims that day, many from Russia, Belarus, Poland, Latvia, Greece, Romania, Moldova, Germany, etc.

Unbenoknownst to many faithful is that there is a growing Catholic presence in The Ukraine, Russian Federation and other Eastern European countries, thanks to the growing dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Primates in Russia, Ukraine and Greece. In actuality, there is very little difference between Catholic and Orthodox Churches; both teach that Sacred Scripture is complemented and perfected with Sacred Tradition. The Eucharistic Adoration, the Bread and Body of Christ is integral to the said Churches and in professing of the Faith. I was able to visit and go to mass with some of my colleagues who were Catholics as well. For the good time in Kiev we attended only Orthodox masses, as we did not  know of a Catholic Church, but on our 2nd week, we found out that there was a Ukrainian Catholic Church a good 5 blocks from our university center. Every sunday we would walk that to church and to attend mass; it was beautiful. Tho the mass was said in the Ukrainian language, the process, the liturgy (which we followed by english pamphlets) was identical to the English counterparts celebrated in the United States. Some pictures of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kiev, Ukraine. This was a beautiful church.

Outside. The church was established 5 centuries ago. Thanks to the faithful missionary priests.

On June 12, 2006,

as part of my visit to Western Ukraine, before heading to the Carpathian Mountains with friends, I took a 2 day pilgrimage to the Church of the Franciscan Order based in Lvov, Ukraine. The order there was established by Polish priests and monks some centuries ago, and the architecture and style is rather unique. In my opinion and observation, Western Ukraine had a higher percentage of Catholics as compared to the Orthodox East. Nonetheless, both were unique and beautiful.

Some pictures of the churches in Western Ukraine in Lvov Oblast.
