Water Safety Tips for Children

My toddler son loves water. I knew from his very first tubby that I had my work cut out for me. He splashed and giggled and splashed and wiggled and wiggled some more. Oh boy, I knew I was going to have to deploy children’s water safety tips if we both were going to survive to his teenage years.

There is a lot of goodness about his aquatic joy. I love that a simple bucket of water or a faucet can keep him amused for hours. But, as he becomes more adventuresome, his complete lack of fear around water scares me. A LOT. There are few things I have irrational fears about, but my child drowning is one of them. I try not to be a helicopter parent, but anytime Owen is near water, I am right on top of him.

And it’s a good thing because we’ve had some incidences. Like just this past weekend when he wiggled out of daddy’s arms and decided to run around the hotel pool. He had on his life vest but he was giving us his “C’mon and chase me” grin which is never a good sign.

So, I’ve been gathering water safety advice and tips for my splash-loving toddler. Here they are:

Life vests are a must around pools, lakes and large water sources. There’s no flexibility on this one with Owen, unlike with his sister who would calmly let us hold her at this age. I read to be sure to get one that fits properly and not to substitute with inflatable options.

Take an infant/child CPR class. It’s been many years since I’ve taken it but definitely need to start looking into a local course. At the very least, it will make me more relaxed knowing I have the tools to save him if something unthinkable happens.

Stay within arm’s length of children near water. I’m embracing my inner helicopter!
Always have your mobile phone nearby. The thought of not having a phone at all times sounds silly in today’s age. But I always check anyways — those few minutes could save a life.

Be sure home pools are completely enclosed by a fence. We don’t have one but we spend a lot of time at my brother’s pool. The bigger kids are always coming in and out of the gate to the pool area — usually squeezing by Owen and typically not securing it properly. My husband and I always stick right near him to lock the gate and prevent “the toddler chase” into the danger zone.

As best you can, try to remove toys and other enticing play objects from around the pool. This is difficult for us because we have an older child and we’re always guests at someone else’s pool. We try to establish the rule that “toy” playing happens outside the pool area.

Consider swim lessons — which I need to do. This is not a guarantee against drowning but it can provide a foundation for water safety rules and proper swim etiquette. I read that the best programs follow the national YMCA guidelines for swim instruction which advise instructors not to submerge young children and encourage parents to participate in lessons.

Always drain tubs, kiddie pools, water buckets, or anything else after use.

At the beach be observant of strong undertows and rip currents that can easily sweep children (and adults) underwater.

Be aware that small pools of water including landscaping (i.e. koi ponds) can be a source of danger. The arm’s length rule applies in yards as well.

Know the signs of drowning because they look nothing like the thrashing and screaming you see on TV or in the movies. The real warning signs are quiet and often missed.

Water Safety Rules to Teach Every Child

Don’t go near water without an adult.

Never dunk another child.

Don’t run on the pool deck or boat dock.

Always jump in feet first.

This final note is an important reminder, mostly for me and my irrational fear:

Water should be a source of exploration and fun for children. Just make it a point to be alert and follow some basic water safety guidelines for children.
