My toddler son loves water. I knew from his very first tubby that I had my work cut out for me. He splashed and giggled and splashed and wiggled and wiggled some more. Oh boy, I knew I was going to have to deploy children’s water safety tips if we both were going to survive to his teenage years.
There is a lot of goodness about his aquatic joy. I love that a simple bucket of water or a faucet can keep him amused for hours. But, as he becomes more adventuresome, his complete lack of fear around water scares me. A LOT. There are few things I have irrational fears about, but my child drowning is one of them. I try not to be a helicopter parent, but anytime Owen is near water, I am right on top of him.
And it’s a good thing because we’ve had some incidences. Like just this past weekend when he wiggled out of daddy’s arms and decided to run around the hotel pool. He had on his life vest but he was giving us his “C’mon and chase me†grin which is never a good sign.
