Get more out of small spaces
By Chinggay Labrador, Pretty Does It | Yahoo! SHE – Fri, Sep 6, 2013 2:39 PM PHT

Whether you’re living in a 30 square meter apartment or a 300 square meter house, every homeowner can do with more space.

Opening up your home to more space not only works visually, allowing you to virtually breathe more and feel more relaxed; it also gives you more opportunities to store the things you accumulate, and tuck away what you need but don’t want to have lying around, out in the open.

While living in a tight room can seem like you’ve got design restrictions coming in from every which way, there are many decorating tips you can apply to make things work.

1. Go for optical illusions. Whether this means employing mirrors to visually double the space you’ve got, or using long, floor-sweeping curtains to make your room stretch vertically, know that you can use functional elements to create visual depth. Surrounding yourself with an environment that seems large gives off the same feeling that an actual larger space can offer.

2. Opt for monochrome. Filling up your room with too many colors can create a lot of visual clutter, making a confined space look even smaller than it already is. Consider painting your walls, furniture, and built in shelves in the same shade, mimicking that color family even with your throw pillows and sheets. Not only do you get a clean, neutral and restful look, but everything that fills up your space will visually retreat providing you more room to breathe.

3. Double up. Not enough can be said about using the same pieces of furniture in a multitude of ways. Have your study desk double as your vanity. Invest in a sofa bed if you’re keen on having guests over frequently. Paint that blank wall in your kitchen with chalkboard paint and have it as your reminder wall for all family announcements and schedules. Do you really need a dining area? Or do you find yourself eating at your breakfast nook all the time anyway? You can probably do away with a redundant area and make better use of it. Being smart about your space means knowing that not every single square inch needs to have a dedicated, individual function.

4. Turn to open shelving. Laying everything out in the open can seem unappealing to those who want everything tucked in and hidden from view, but integrating open storage in your home is an inexpensive way to get things off the floor and out of your main space. Industrial shelving units offer a clean, modern look and come relatively cheap in hardware stores or home depot. The best part about them is they force you to keep things organized and neat at all times.

5. Break up space using your floor. Putting dividers in an already confined space can lessen the minimal space you’re working with. Consider breaking up the separate areas of your studio unit with rugs and carpets instead. Not only do they add character, they introduce fun textures and patterns to a room too.
