10 grocery items that do double duty

When you run out of cleaning agents, moisturizers, or even toothpaste, run to your kitchen for supplies!

By Maui V. Reyes for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

Vodka.
Aside from causing some people to sing off-key, vodka is also a great insect repellent. Because of its high alcohol content, a few spritzes of it on a bug scares the sorry bug away, drunk as a loon. Also, vodka keeps cut flowers fresh longer. Much like friends coming over for a nightcap, you can make flowers last longer by giving them some vodka! Add a few drops of vodka and a large pinch of sugar to the water in the vase. Change the water-vodka-sugar mixture daily to stunt ethylene production (ethylene is the gas that makes flowers age and wilt).

Avocado.
Not only is it yummy, but it also doubles as an anti-aging face mask. Avocado is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, and its oils help stimulate collagen and elastin production. Puree a ripe avocado and mix in ¼ cup sour cream (the lactic acid in the sour cream will help exfoliate dead skin cells). Spread over your face, and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing.

Baking soda.
Use it as a dry cleanser to remove gunk in sinks, bath tubs, and toilets—they work really well on cleaning chrome fixtures, too! Just sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and wipe away. Then simply rinse off with water. Also, did you know you could use baking soda to clean your teeth, too? A paste made out of baking soda and a bit of water works as well as toothpaste. It naturally cleans the mouth and whitens teeth!

Ground coffee.
Before dumping into the trash, consider mixing with some sugar and olive oil for a D-I-Y coffee scrub in the shower! The only downside to this is, you might smell like a walking coffee cup afterwards. (You could remedy that with some moisturizing lotion.) If you’re not keen on a coffee scrub, toss the ground coffee in your vegetable garden instead. Coffee is high in nitrogen, which most vegetable plants love.

Eggs.
Egg yolks are rich in fats and proteins, making them great moisturizers; the whites contain bacteria-eating enzymes, which help remove unwanted oils. So the next time you buy a dozen, keep some for your hair. Yes, your hair! For normal hair, use the entire egg; for oily hair, just use the whites; and if you’ve got dry, brittle hair, bring on the yolk! Coat your locks with the egg mixture appropriate for your hair type, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water (using warm water might cook the eggs!). Do whole-egg treatments once a month, and whites-only every two weeks.

Olive oil.
Forgot to buy shaving cream at the supermarket? Use olive oil! Olive oil is thick, it cuts down chances of getting nicks and razor burn. Plus, it’s a natural moisturizer for your skin, too; no need to slather on lotion afterwards.

Rice.
Do you use a coffee or spice grinder? Chances are, it’s filled with gunk in little crevices you can’t reach. To clean it out, simply pour in a handful of uncooked rice, and grind away! The rice will absorb all that build-up.

Salt.
Got stubborn coffee or tea stains on your mugs? Sprinkle salt on calamansi peel then rub the entire thing on the stains. How about any slow-moving drains? Mix ½ cup of salt with a quart of hot water then pour the solution down the pipe.

Tea bags.
Don’t throw out that Early Grey bag just yet! Cool used tea bags and brush it over wood surfaces, such as cabinets and floors. The tannins in the tea help polish the surface, and clean it, as well!

Vinegar.
The ingredient that makes your adobo rock can also turn your kitchen—and the rest of your home—into a sparkling clean haven. Mix ¼ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon liquid detergent, and enough vinegar to make a paste. Now you’ve got your own homemade cleaning agent!
