If you’re at your wit's end figuring out how to redo your furniture layout or organize your kids’ rooms in time for the new year, look to this thousands-old Chinese art for some simple, mess-defying strategies.

Superstitious or not, if you’re out of ideas, these suggestions may come in handy!

1. Change your color palette

Different shades correspond to different energies, so figure out what kind of vibe you’d like for your room and redo your color scheme. Red means energy, yellow refers to centering. Blacks and dark blues are soothing, while white means purity. Green is perfect for growth.

2. Cover up your windows

Curtains will stop positive energy from escaping your inner sanctum.

3. Look at what’s under your bed

All that junk you’ve stuffed under your bed frame may be cluttering up your space (and mind) with unwanted energy. Discard what’s no longer needed.

4. Change your clock’s batteries.

If it has stopped ticking, time has stopped and you can’t move forward.

5. Get those door locks working

For practical reasons, you’ve got to stay safe. Feng Shui says that unhinged openings leave you with a feeling of insecurity (and with good reason!).

6. Replace your straight edges with softer, rounder shapes

A round or oval table allows for better flow of chi (energy). Equality makes for better energy.

7. Junk anything chipped or cracked

Practically speaking, they can be dangerous. Feng Shui says that these correspond to a dead energy.

8. Stay minimalist with your kitchen counter

The kitchen is the heart of the home and you don’t want that heart filled with piles of unnecessary objects.

9. Take the TV out of the bedroom

It encourages conversation with your partner, and makes for a more interactive, better-balanced relationship.

10. Make every space useful

You want to breathe life into all that square footage. Every space must have a purpose.
