Identifying himself only as a businessman who travels a lot, the Secret Santa wanted to maintain his anonymity. Stamped with the words, “Secret Santa†in red the mostly$100 bills were handed out at the bus terminal in downtown Reading Tuesday night.
Many recipients were overcome with emotion. The kindness of a stranger, the generous handout during tough economic times inspired these people.
With hugs and blessings, this Secret Santa gave $100 bills to strangers at the terminal then preceded to the local Salvation Army. There he handed out more cash to volunteers, children, and housekeeping.
Wherever he went he gave away the cash. As he left the building, he saw a woman standing in the rain waiting to pick up her children.
“How many children do you have?†Santa said.
The woman replied, “Six.â€
Well there you go. The Secret Santa said to her, “You have six children? Well, here you go,†as he counted off the one hundred dollar bills, giving her a total of $600. “A hundred for each child,†he told the woman.
When a person thinks of having a bad day, or how they are going to feed their family, many times they are distraught. In Reading, Pa one stranger made all the difference.
The real message of Secret Santa, he said, is that others should follow his example and do random acts of kindness during the Christmas season. He said he is continuing in the legacy of Larry Stewart who before his death in 2006, gave away nearly $1.3 million posing as a Secret Santa.
“I promised Stewart on his deathbed that I would continue the tradition of Secret Santa,†he said.
Here is one way to pay it forward. In the coming weeks, Secret Santa plans to travel to other cities from San Diego to Detroit and do the same.
