Making a Difference : An Inspiration

 Making a Difference: An Inspiration

“A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach. In the distance, he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got close, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean. What are you doing? the wise man asked? The sun is coming up and the tide is going out; if I don't throw them in, they'll die. But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can't possibly make a difference. The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves. It made a difference to that one, she replied. The young girl's actions represent something special in each of us. We are all gifted with the ability to make a difference.”

A simple act of making a difference.

In making a difference you don’t need to be famous, you don’t need to be wealthy, you don’t need to be brilliant, you only have the burning desire to help. Making a difference is a journey; it is a lifetime journey, however, a journey of one thousand miles starts with a few simple steps.

We see beautiful oak trees everyday, but do we bother to remember that these great oak trees, in the beginning were tiny acorns. Will you be willing to plant an acorn? Will you be the spark that starts a bonfire?  Will you light a candle in the dark? Will you keep walking until the end of the tunnel?

In a lifetime, we always have a choice. As Victor Frankl, Author Holocaust Survivor puts in.” Man must decide for better or worse what will be the monument of his existence.”

The underlying message reminds me of one piercing-powerful quote from the movie Schindler's List,

"Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire"

When I was searching to become a priest during college, my spiritual director, Fr. Mark Hofman said to me, "Search yourself, sit a while, in silence and ask what do you want to do with your life. Do you feel called to make a difference in the spiritual life, or do you want to do so in the secular? You must discern, Al."

Everything else, in my personal life experience, is a product of that life decision. Making a difference is based on choices, many of which are set before us by Providence and by circumstance.

So i invite everyone to make that choice. Make a difference. In the end, i find that there is holiness in the secular life. Because we are all, the priestly and the laity, called to live a good life. Not only for our own selves, but for those around us who share in the same Body.

PS. Wolf, this is a truly discerning piece you posted. It touches me to the core.

Thank you again. If there is one thing that I am truly proud of, is the fact that I never put the sophistications I enjoyed in my head.  I am still the old 13 year old barrio girl that left Cortes to find a greener pasture.

My parents told me, they are very proud the kind of person I became, because they were absent during my formative years.  I left home when I was 13 to find my destiny, and never saw them until I was 24. Eleven long years struggling alone was not easy, but I never make that as an excuse to become a bad and bitter person.   I know my parents were guilty for abandoning their responsibilities but I fully understand that they lacked the capability to follow my dreams. They give me life, that is worth than anything.  As far as I know, I am a typical child that will do everything within my power to shield my parents from pains and harms.

Along the way, there were so many people that helped and influenced my life.  To me they are angels sent by God to fulfill a purpose. They made a difference in my life, in turn I have to extend that favors.  I just wish that one day God will make me more capable than I am now so I can do more.

I always believe that the greatest use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it. That is the only proof that we successfully carried our purpose here on earth.

Hubag, there is nothing wrong in being positive and seeing the goods in life. Some dwell on the positives, some dwell on the negatives.
Ang meaning ani, life is full of sh*t, why add depth to it. Instead, we should remove it so we can enter the house. :)

The moral, life is filled with difficulties and pettiness of the world, it is when one looses the sight of good and focuses on the negativity, that one lets the world defeat their inner drive.

Thank YOU, for sharing this with us....

:)

PS. There are challenges that come our way, negative people that do nothing but speak ill of others, back biting others, but we must not focus on that, for you see, these are obstacles. These are the very mountains that Christ tells us that is in the blocking path of the mustard seed (us!).

So what are we to do? Have faith. Faith in your Lord, faith in your personal ability, strengths and the courage to undertake the measure to change the world you live in. It is a positive encouragement that he sends us, a test of inner strength, and a moral uprightness that we need to take hold. Life, my dear, is never always sunny side up. It has its nasty sides, dirty sides, and hell-like sides.

It is our role and responsibility to fight through. And literally tell the mountains to move. And it will move.

Thanks for sharing your life story. And powerful message. We all appreciate it.

Positivity is the goal of prayer, and spiritual uplifting, Hubag. It is up to the individual listener / reader to take it into his own point of view and translate it. The manner how one translates it is reflective of that individual's thought process. Bias (or not).

God Bless!

Some of us sorely need to be uplifted to being less self-centered, obviously.

What seems self centered to others is not self center but sharing points of view. It is unfortunate that others will judge others upon their own personal bias.

Mo add pa ko, kinsa man perfect? Kinsa tawo sa kalibutan perfect, ug walang sala? Ikaw? Surely you are not, tho you are a good writer, are not perfect.

Nor am I (am the least!); friends know it, and for sure my God knows it.

While others have the habit of criticizing people, they should also look at their mirror and see the ugliness they see in others, obviously.

But as imperfect people, my dear Hubag, we should see the possibilities of improvement. And that is what life is about..improving one's self!

Either be we improve our poor pasts (fiscal etc), lack of education (by going to school), health (by getting medicine), etc.

Improving oneself, helping others, encouraging them, offering a helping hand and not simply destroying them and hurting them.

Peace.

It can happen that for one presumably uplifted spirit there are two utterly pissed off ones.

A person who tries to help a person who is down on the ground does not think about them being pissed of or not. The trait of a good person is to be rejected even if they offer; even if it means being mocked. Who cares. Better to suffer for Christ than to suffer glory amongst men (as the saying goes).

This reminds me of the life of Mother Theresea when she first came to India. She was rejected by many at first; not all were kind to her, some were, some where not. But her genuine kindness and goodness was manifested in that tho she was rejected, spitted upon by others (this did happen), she still continued.

Something for us to ponder upon. And encouraged by.

He he, of course, as the following definitions would suggest:

sanctimonious:

1. Hypocritically pious or devout (Merriam-Webster)
2. Feigning piety or righteousness(The Free Dictionary)
3. Holier-than-thou: making an exaggerated show of holiness or moral superiority (Encarta)

Indeed, beauty sometimes amuses. ;D

I know of one woman who goes to church every day. She goes to church every day and goes to mass for the souls in purgatory. I find this beatiful; and this sanctimonious act is the example of spiritual motherhood. Something that all of us to take into consideration.

This very good woman does not have to this, but she does so. Contemplative of her role in Christ's body.

This is the very example of self-less sanctimonious love.

I pray for her and think of her because she is an example of On Going Self-Improvement, by helping others, she helps her own self.

Every Christian is called to follow Christ.

That is the meaning of the word Christian, my dear Hubag.

The word Christian comes from the Greek "KRISTOS", follower of Christ.

In fact we are reminded by the Bible to try to follow Christ and lead by example:

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:1-4)

~~

2 Timothy best tells us, my dear Hubag,:

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.

Any Bible-believing Christian will know that to be a Christian is to suffer like Christ.

In fact, being a Christian is to battle spiritual warefare that is present in this world.

This is obvious to us who are Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists, Methodists and any and all Bible-Reading Christians.

In fact, we should glory in suffering for Christ.

We are TOLD that we will suffer for Christ.

~~

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for HIM.
(Philippians 1:29)

Whatever grudge you have against me, I will ask to have peace with you, because it does not do any good to hold it. If I may have done damage to you, then I apologize.

Peace be with you, brother.

You erased my posts many times in grave abuse of your adminstrative powers. You sowed the wind, my friend...

The posts that were erased were because they were personal attacks, Hubag. I will not tolerate that here.
Discussion is allowed but I will never tolerate personal attacks and discrimination.

They were posts that exposed the limits of intellectual pretensions. Personal attacks? Well, there you go again, talking from your high horse. Go ahead, strut some more...

By all means, there is no high horse, Hubag. I walk on my own two feet and not on any horse (figurative). Let differences be put aside, my dear Hubag. I will be willing to walk with you in the same direction. Please know that if my posts were ever sounding too "high horse-like", know that it was not my intent.

But I will stand by my decision that any libelous posts, or any that holds discrimination and personal attacks will be acted upon.

I will never tolerate personal attacks in the Forum for means of pleasure and/or satisfaction.

your exchange is fascinating, bai hubs and bro enz.

i'm curious, though, as to what constitutes libelous comments.  i find this matter delicate because one of you is in the position to serve as judge and executioner at the same time.

as a poster myself, i know we run the risk of being misunderstood.  i remember trying to explain some things about the middle east in my exchange with alycx (missed now, by me).  somewhere along the way, she told me to socialize some more because my "knowledge" is making me lonely.  so i gave her 'socialize', and ended up being labeled arrogant (a wind blowing too hard).  such instances i take as leeways for more exciting exchanges, not for deletion or banning.  otherwise, this forum will be boring for most.

so you "will never tolerate personal attacks in this Forum, for means of pleasure and/or satisfaction".  what about if they're for means of displeasure and/or dissatisfaction, or for means of "attacking" someone else in favor of your side?

i can't imagine you deleting anyone who agrees with you, bro.  that's your tragedy.

Personal attacks in any form will not be tolerated. There is a fine line between intellectual discourse and personal attacks whose main goal is to attack the poster, and not the subject / topic at hand. The latter does not cultivate healthy discourse, but rather, animosity and destructive criticism.

All the best.

You said it all, Wolf. The beauty of life is that it has its ups and downs; and it is really what we make of it. If we choose to be positive , then it has an effect. If we choose to be negative and sulk, then it also has an effect. But as you point out in your message to us in this topic thread; we all have a chance to make a difference to inspire and help a fellow human being when they are in need, down in the dumps, what ever it may be. And in the end, making a difference for the positive is a source of inspiration and an inspiring act in itself for those being helped and around.

The great Hindu philosopher and Indian national hero, Mahatmas Gandhi (other wise known as "Gandhi-Ji), once said : "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Warm Regards.

and so is there a fine line between truth and self-packaging, between ego and preaching.  be that as it may, since you are in the position to tolerate or not and to judge what is personal and topical in this forum, i hope that you carry enough humility, in keeping with the way and the truth and the light whom you so often mention, to be able to tell the difference and to practice your forum power with magnanimity.

it goes without saying that the real test of character is how a person in power practices that power sparingly.

you deleted a certain ‘mark’ when you started your online bible study after he asked you a question, and then you went on and on with your bible quotes and interpretations as if, and i take care to say as if, the multitude should be awed and must listen and obey.

well, there’s a whale of a difference between ‘sanctimonious’ and ‘sanctity’.  as for me, if i needed a homily, i’d go to church.

i believe this forum is also about news and fun and humor.  and ideas, the kind that flows in the currents of the mind when one has the luxury of time away from one’s daily cares, ideas that cross the mind in a flash like lighting that could go in any direction across a dark sky.  this forum catches and records those.  and we are all the better for it.

Islander,

The starting of Bible Study was to study specific bible verses and answer questions as I had been receiving questions. It is an open forum, but anything else that is negative and contrary to the subject matter is to be avoided. I started the thread not for myself, but the benefit of all of us to study and read; if a person disagrees with my interpretation or with another's interpretation, they have the right and freedom to say so and share their interpretation of a specific bible verse and do so civilly. Attacking one another is and should be avoided. And I will not allow the deviation of the Study of the Holy Bible by personal remarks. I openly invite All and Everyone to The Study of the Bible.

The Grace that we have been filled with is to share the good news, to those who wish to hear. Ug dili gusto ang tawo mo discuss sa Bible, then do not discuss, no one is forcing anyone to read it or antagonize it.

As for your reminder, and point of view, I thank you for it. I appreciate it.

That said, let us move on.

Blessings and Peace,
Lorenzo

Islander,

The study of the Holy Bible is a very sensitive issue, and requires all of us to sit down and take everything in, taking into consideration of the original Greek, Hebrew meaning of the word and then to modern translation.

A bible study fellow of mine, once said, "We need to surround ourselves with like minded peoples in studying the bible..."

When we study the bible, we have to put away differences, and hostility away. That said, I invite you, sister, to studying with me.
I admit that I have not read the bible enough, and am myself a student and still learning. Perhaps, we can learn together and share our input on a specific verses. I extend this invitation to all who are interested.

But the thing that i request is that discussion be solely on the Holy Bible.

For anything else, PM me privately, as we are diverting the main point of this thread.

Thanks.
