Curious father cannot believe what his kind-hearted son does in his spare time

A curious father was left stunned after discovering where his young son was going on his daily walks.

He noticed his son left their house in the rural Philippines every day for two weeks, carrying a backpack, and one day he decided to tag along.

The pair stopped on the side of the road and moments later a group of starving stray dogs came towards them.

His son told him he had been taking the trips to feed the dogs, who appear to be infected with mange, a skin disease caused by parasitic mites.

Remembering when he first saw the animals, he explained:  ‘I’m embarrassed to say I was pretty disgusted. But my son changed my perspective entirely.

‘He doesn’t have my prejudice and paranoia I guess. I was blown away when I saw that little zombie pup do a hi-five again and again.’

The proud father now supplies the dog food for his son and hopes to treat the stray dogs for their skin condition and eventually re-home them.

He added his son, who has been taking precautions to disinfect himself after interacting with the strays, has ambitions to open his own animal shelter.

a few months later, the internet's amazing response...

Remember the boy who spent his pocket money helping stray animals? His story just got 10x better

Mark Molloy for Metro.co.uk

Animal-loving Ken Amante is to open his own animal shelter after receiving more than £25,000 in donations (Picture: Caters)

A kind-hearted boy who found internet fame after using his pocket money to help feed stray dogs is set to open his own animal shelter after receiving more than £27,000 in online donations.

Ken Amante captured the hearts of thousands around the world after his father shared pictures of him feeding the starving dogs on the streets of southern Philippines.

And now the nine-year-old is set to open his Happy Animals Club shelter, which is currently under construction, to help more stray animals.

Ken, who lives in Davao City, explained he wants to help the high number of stray dogs who are put down for ‘no reason’.

‘I came up with the idea for the Happy Animals Club when I was thinking that there may be more kill shelters than actual shelters for animals,’ he explained.

‘I want to save as many of those dogs as I can from being killed for no reason.’

He added: ‘So far I have three dogs but I hope to care for more, as well as feed skinny dogs on the street when I see them.

‘The next step will be to raise enough money to care for as many dogs as possible.’

The £27,000 in donations helped the youngster buy a plot of land for his shelter, as well as the building materials and carpenters to help him build it.

The remainder of the money has been used to care for three dogs he already cares for called White Puppy, Brownie and Blackie.

Thanks to many generous donations, work has started on the Happy Animals Club animal shelter! The first task is to build a fence so that the dogs don't go running onto the street whenever the gate is opened.

The construction crew, from left: Dexter, Michael, Ken, and Boy. Dexter worked on the house that was being built across the street from where we live. Michael is a neighbor on the same street. Boy was sent by our landlord to fix our house after it got battered by a storm. I chose this crew because they are all really nice guys and they all work very hard even when it is very hot.

ken's shoutout thanks in his club website:

shout outs

So many kind people donated that I can't mention all, but I would like to occasionally give a shout out to some of the donors who helped me save the dogs.

A belated but big BIG shout out to Andy and Megan of Atlanta, USA! Check out their beautiful rescues, Kirby, Phoenix, and Phinnigan in this great picture taken in the winter. Phinnigan looks a bit like Blackie only bigger!

i have received the support of a large number of people and i am just as grateful to all of them. Happy Animals Club would not exist without the generous donations of many people all over the world.

here are some past shoutouts to a few of my supporters.

May 2, 2014

I would like to give a shout out to one of Happy Animals Club's supporters who is an American soldier serving in a country called Afgahnistan.he told me he donated in memory of his dog Sheba (the leftest picture) who died when she was 14 years old and who was also a rescue dog.my father told me, serving in afgahnistan is a very tough and dangerous job and I am grateful to Jeff for helping the dogs here in the Philippines even though he is doing a tough job. thank you Jeff!

a big shout-out to Bince Bince who is from the Philippines and living in Canada now. He likes soccer and supports Liverpool and the Azkals, the Philippine national team. (Azkals means "street dogs"!) He has 2 dogs in Canada who came from a rescue organization, Charm and Astra, they are so cute.

He also has dogs back in the Philippines, on the left is Jaguar who died the day after Bince2x went on a visit back to the Philippines, Bince2x says it's as if Janguar wanted to stay alive to see his master one more time! On the right is Bince2x with a fox-tailed doggy named Chucky.

i got a big surprise the other day. Billie, a teenage girl from England sent me a really big donation and also this drawing of the three dogs and me. wow!!!

i told her she should become an artist and she said that she is studying to be an illustrator/artist. Billie has 2 dogs and she also used to have a dog called Dot who was with her for 15 years since Billie was only 4 years old. Billie says: Although losing my dog broke my heart, I'm glad she had the opportunity to live a long, happy life, and I'm glad you've given these animals a chance at a long happy life. Thank you very much for making it possible Billie, you're amazing!
