Mathematics is now easier to learn in a U.S. public school, thanks to a Filipina teacher.

The New York City Department of Education in its website lauded Geraldino for her ability to simplify mathematical concepts for students.

“[She] is able to deconstruct the most complex mathematical concepts and make them palpable to even the most resistant students,” the website quoted Geraldino’s principal as saying.

Geraldino was also praised for having “constantly searched for ways to grow as an educator and seeks out professional development opportunities to improve her practice.”

“Great teachers are a school's most valuable asset. We must recognize their skills and the impact they have on our students” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg honored the Geraldino and 10 others awardees at a ceremony at Gracie Mansion where they were given $3,500 each and a Big Apple trophy.

The Filipina, who spent nine of her 24 years as a teacher in New York City, was chosen from more than 2,000 nominations by students, teachers, schools and families.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Geraldino earned her education degree from St. Paul’s University where she majored in math and minored in English.

She taught high school in a Catholic university in Manila for eight years, before moving on to teach in college in the same school. She also served as the school’s Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The teacher who is affectionately called “Miss G” in school attributed her passion for teaching to her father and her grade school math teacher.

“My father taught me things when I was a young child, math especially, in an interesting way. I looked up to him,” Geraldino said in a profile posted on her school’s website.

“I wanted to be like him—he’s not a teacher, but I wanted to be like him,” she added.

It was when she also made her elementary math teacher her role model that she realized that she wanted to be a teacher, Geraldino said.

“My teachers would always say ‘Oh, you love to talk. Maybe that’s where your passion is.’ From there it just developed. I love teaching,” she noted.

Think wisely before you speak and listen intently to the people with fruit on the tree. Break down the barrier of stubbornness and pride otherwise you'll always be a part of the crowd..
