A Chain of Love

Our Daily Bread

Each new day, it seems, brings new ways our family sees the body of Christ at work. One demonstration of the fellowship of Christians sits on my desk as I write.

It’s a basket overflowing with letters from people I have never met. Since the time Our Daily Bread readers first learned of the car accident that ushered our daughter Melissa into heaven 6 years ago, we’ve received hundreds of messages from our brothers and sisters in the faith.

They’ve said things such as: “I grieve with you, my brother, and I will keep you and your family in my prayers.” “I weep at your loss.” “I hurt with you.” Many recommended books to read. Others sent poems or articles of comfort and hope. Some shared their own stories of bereavement as we discovered new partners on the path of pain. They demonstrate the principle of love among the family of God that’s commanded in 1 John 4:11.

Each of those gracious notes is different from the others, but they contain a common thread: Because of our shared faith in Christ, I find my heart joined to the hearts of the writers of these messages.

Hearts linked by Jesus create a chain of love that can encourage even the most grieving heart.

Romans 10:9
"That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved."

I would like to share you something that happened today.  I went to have lunch with a friend and when she learned I was going to volunteer to the Feed the Needy Program at our church, where we don't only feed but also give things like clothing, etc.  We collect food from local stores and restaurants - either for cooking or already cooked.  Then we set out a very nice table arrangement with white linen and flowers like in the fine dining restaurants.  Also, in a separate room, we display bread, pastries, vegetables, clothes that these needy people can take home.  Anyway, as I was talking to this lady friend, she said she was going to come by my house later today and she did.  She brought boxes of good stuff that I could take tomorrow.  I was so amazed.  She said, they lived by the generosity of people when they were young and most of all, God richly blessed her with her life.  30 years ago, she was told she had 6 months to live and 30 years later, she is still alive.  She has MS. See the chain of love there?  Me, I don't have anything much to give except for my time and my skill in cooking.

So very true. Just being heard and knowing that prayers are being ushered for a loved one or a friend can help even the broken hearted. I truly believe in the power of prayer. It is invaluable during the grieving process. Truly and absolutely.
