The Corps of the Pontifical Swiss Guard or Swiss Guard (German: Schweizergarde, Italian: Guardia Svizzera Pontificia, Latin: Pontificia Cohors Helvetica, or Cohors Pedestris Helvetiorum a Sacra Custodia Pontificis) is something of an exception to the Swiss rulings of 1874 and 1927. It is a small force maintained by the Holy See and is responsible for the safety of the Pope, including the security of the Apostolic Palace. It serves as the de facto military of Vatican City. Swiss Guards in the beginning are mercenaries of the pope of Rome. This is during the time when kingdoms went to war because of their religious belief, the pope since the church itself has no military organization recruited the Swiss people to fight for the church. Since then by church tradition the Swiss are chosen to guard the pope.

En Addendum:

Tho benign in comparison to the Roman Empire's elite Praetorian Guard, the Swiss Guard functions almost in the same way, the personal protection of The Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The Praetorian Guard handled the personal protection of the Emperor of the Roman Empire.

The difference, and most importantly, is the fact that the Swiss Guards don't actively assassinate the Pope, as compared to the Praetorian Cohorts as was the case of Caligula, Nero, etc (Roman Emperors who were assassinated by the Praetorian).
