At the Philippine Constitutional Convention in 1934, a  tall and handsome young man presented his credentials as the elected representative from the province of Cebu.  No big deal, he was just one of several hundred delegates. However, what intrigued his fellow delegates was his claim that he had power to heal the sick. To restrain the boastful pretender from making any embarrassing display of his imagined prowess, his peers appointed him as the Official Time Keeper and seated him next to a large clock.  He took his assignment seriously and attended every session.  He made sure nobody exceeded his allotted time.  His role kept him so busy that he did not even have the time to participate in the debates.

Hilario Camino Moncado was born in 1898 at the height of the Philippine Independence movement.  A gifted person, he graduated at the age of nine at the India College of Mystery and Psychics.  In 1914, when he was 15 years old, Moncado went to Hawaii and joined the growing number of Filipino migrant workers in the sugar and pineapple fields of Hawaii.  He didn't stay too long in Hawaii and moved to the US mainland in the early 1920's.  By 1925, Moncado had built a large number of followers and he organized them into the Filipino Federation of America (FFA), a mutual-aid organization.  Under the leadership of the charismatic Moncado, FFA evolved into a messianic movement.  He had followers in the Philippines, mainly in Cebu, and the US.

there's also a moncadista colony in cebu, nestled in an inland elevated valley some meters above sea level, accessible via minglanilla.

Whether he was a hero, prophet or charlatan, or all of the above, or none of the above, or any combination thereof, or whatnot, Moncado certainly was one of the most colorful figures in Philippine history.

i can believe this.  the seniors among them (they must have been centenarians!) were very pale and strangely smooth-skinned.  i attributed it to their vegetarian diet and the colony's clean cold air.  that was some 20 years ago, when curiosity got the better of me and i went to their place with some friends.

Whether he was a hero, prophet or charlatan, or all of the above, or none of the above, or any combination thereof, or whatnot, Moncado certainly was one of the most colorful figures in Philippine history.

truly colorful; his followers revere him like he's the messiah.  one cannot be sure if the manner in which his followers worship him and his memory was according to his instructions or to his followers' own interpretation.  his widow, who gave us a tour of their place at the time of our visit, was garbed in a 19th century western dress.  she came on strong and was obviously the current leader then.

i gathered that one of the widow's primary duties, aside from keeping the community going, is the see to it that moncado's remains continue to be well-preserved through annual re-embalming.  it was placed in a glass casket, on display inside a small 'chapel'.  (i dared not look.)

the 'chapel' was on a promontory a walking distance away from the colony's main square.  from there one can see cebu's northwestern coast and islets.  it was a beautiful sight, which to my mind was broken only by the words of one of their members (understandably called 'moncadista') who said without batting an eyelash that from that vantage they can see UFOs almost every night.  ???

hehe, i was never much of a joiner of anything, preferring much to be on the outside looking in.  (joining tb is already a major decision for me.)  ;D

want to know more?  now i'm surprised that moncado had such academic achievements!  let us grant that his various degrees were exotic, but he was educated nevertheless.  it may surprise you to know that the colony's square is peppered with slabs on which are written or carved "excerpts" from various philippine-american agreements, already outdated even at the time of my visit.  funnier still, these contained only the end parts of those agreements, starting with the "wherefore" clause.  they didn't make any sense.  my conclusion:  probably his followers were mostly illiterate at the time.  (sorry.)

Yellow Ribbons
by Michael D Nalley TC

I think I will write you a love sonnet
With all of the cliche' sugar a spice.
Those pretty flowers for your new bonnet,
All things desirable, beautiful and nice.

On the yellow ribbons there will be knots
To tie us together unconditionally.
Mental images to capture your thoughts,
Songs to sing to you traditionally.

The rhymes will be very free and unforced.
I hope that these written words will ring true,
Even if we're separated, or divorced.
We have fought wars like lovers often do.

Be my lady, I will be your fellow,
Trees are full of ribbons that are yellow.
