This photo, taken on December 9, 1944, in Dillingen, Germany, shows eight members of the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, after several days of ferocious fighting. To reward their outstanding courage, they were all granted a thirty-day furlough. These American heroes are, from left to right (sitting): T/Sgt Thomas L. Chamberlain (Kansas City, Missouri), S/Sgt Merle A. Welfare (Ledyard, Iowa), Sgt Joseph Dorner (New England, North Dakota), and from left to right (standing): S/Sgt Ed Melton (Haskell, Texas), Pvt James Jirles (Athens, Tennessee), S/Sgt Albert J. Apple (Texas), S/Sgt Victor E. Wold (Friday Harbor, Washington), and T/Sgt Albert E. Lambright (Amarillo, Texas).
