A Brief History of Hell

The Inferno

In the 14th century, Florentine Dante Alighieri brought together biblical, mythological, historical, and contemporary figures in his Inferno, the cultural influence of which can hardly be overstated. The Inferno, the first part of his epic poem, La Divina Commedia, has Virgil (who described the underworld in the Aeneid) guiding Dante through nine circles of a Christian Hell. As he spirals down, he sees all sorts of those who have sinned — adulterers, murderers, traitors — and their awful corresponding torments.

Gilded Manuscript

Prayer book The Hours of Catherine of Cleves was commissioned for Catherine of Cleves in 1430 when she was to marry Arnold, Duke of Guelders. With its 157 miniatures, The Hours is considered the greatest Dutch illuminated manuscript in the world. It was taken apart in the 19th Century and rebound incorrectly into two volumes. Here, an angel releases souls from purgatory.

One of Three

No, surreal as it is, it's not a Dalí, and it's far removed from the 20th century. Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch created the massive triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights" c. 1500. The Hell scene (a portion of which is shown above) is just the right panel of the 7-by-13-ft. (220 by 390 cm) piece, the left panel of which features a much more placid environment: Adam and Eve in Eden. Both that and the center panel — depicting those earthly pleasures — are full of light; Bosch warns, though, that darkness, and all its attendant horrors, is just across the border. Packed with detail and symbolism, Madrid's Prado calls it "one of his most enigmatic works."

Judge Not

Tourists crowd into the Sistine Chapel for its ceiling, but also for its altar wall, home to Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment." The towering fresco, completed in 1541, was painted under Pope Paul III. The detail above, from the lower right corner of the wall, show where the damned descend after being judged by Christ. After the Pope's master of ceremonies criticized this genitalia-inclusive "Last Judgment" as inappropriate, Michelangelo painted him in as Minos, a judge of Hell, encircled by a serpent and fitted with the ears of an ass.

Blake's Prophetic Book

The English poet, artist and engraver William Blake created Jerusalem, The Emanation of the Giant Albion between 1804 and 1820. It was the longest and the last of his prophetic books, in which he created his own personal mythology and mixed it with biblical history. The epic poem illustrates the fall and eventual salvation of Albion, the universal human. The plate above — one of the 100 included in Jerusalem — depicts the characters Vala, Hyle and Skofeld.

Nine Lives

In Heavenly Puss, a 1949 Tom and Jerry short, Tom demonstrates his feline ability to survive death — well in his dreams, at least. Tom imagines that he is squashed to death by a piano in one of his epic fights with little Jerry. When he reaches heaven's gate, he is refused entry because of his cruelty to his rodent enemy. In order to be admitted to heaven, he must get Jerry to sign a certificate of forgiveness. Jerry, of course, is dismissive and toys with Tom, but eventually signs to keep bulldog devil Spike from snatching Tom away to hell. It's too late, though, and the stairs to heaven disappear. Luckily, Tom wakes up.

Devil Robot

In Fox's animated show Futurama, the characters occasionally go to Robot Hell, the entrance to which is located in New Jersey. In one episode, Bender (right) is confronted by the Robot Devil and tormented in a series of punishments, such as being rolled into a giant cigar and smoked.

South Park

As cartoon creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker would have it, Hell is a place where Satan and Saddam Hussein are lovers. The 1999 movie South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut arrived in theaters two years after the series debuted on Comedy Central.

Deconstructing Harry

Woody Allen's Harry Block takes the elevator to Hell, which manages to include some sinners Dante didn't specify: "Floor Five: Subway muggers, aggressive panhandlers, and book critics. Floor Six: right-wing extremists, serial killers, lawyers who appear on television. Floor Seven: The Media. Sorry, that floor is all filled up. Floor Eight: escaped war criminals, TV evangelists, and the NRA." After a run-in with his father, Harry has a chat with the devil character (Billy Crystal), who offers to turn on the air conditioning ("it f___s up the ozone layer").
