On December 9, 536 AD. Belisarius took Rome from the Ostrogoths, who a. Having landed in Sicily the previous year, he had encountered little resistance before Rome except in Naples, where a Gothic garrison was present. However, in central-southern Italy there were very few Goths, since almost all of them had settled north of the Po and on the Adriatic. However, Belisarius immediately asked Justinian for reinforcements (the forces he had were really small, less than 10,000 men), who had allocated most of his forces to the war with the Persians:
«According to your orders, I entered the dominions of the Goths, and I reduced Italy, Campania, and the city of Rome to your obedience. Thus far we have fought against swarms of barbarians, but their multitude may prevail in the end. Allow me to speak to you freely: if you want us to live, send us food, if you want us to make conquests, send us weapons, horses and men. As for me, my life is consecrated to your service: it is up to you to reflect whether my death will contribute to the glory and prosperity of your kingdom."

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - John 3:16-18
