8 Surprising Foods Worse Than Bacon
Bacon, crisp, greasy, delicious bacon. Is there anything more delicious? Is there anything worse for you?
Yes.
Well, there are foods worse for you, whether there are foods that are more delicious—that’s subjective, but we say no.
Bacon has a much undeserved bad rap. A single slice has only 43 calories, 3 grams of fat (1 saturated), 3 grams of protein, and 82 mg of sodium. As far as indulgences go you could eat far worse, like:
Breakfast SausageCalories: 267
Fat: 20 g (Saturated: 5.5 g)
Sodium: 540 mg
Next time Flo (the diner waitress, of course) asks you if you want bacon or sausage with your order of over easies, opt for bacon. You can have more than 6 slices of bacon before you come close to the damage that one pork sausage will do to your love handles and arteries.
Peanut ButterCalories: 188
Fat: 16 g (Saturated: 3 g)
Sodium: 147 mg
Peanut butter is often touted as a super food; “healthy fats†they say. But with 3 grams of saturated fat per serving it has more than its fare share of unhealthy fats. You can have three slices of bacon before you reach the same level of saturated fat, and you’ll still have fewer calories and total fat grams.
Coffee…with Half & HalfCalories: 40
Fat: 4g (Saturated: 2 g)
Sodium: 6 mg
The calories we drink in our morning cup(s) of joe may seem inconsequential, but two tablespoons of half-and-half has as many calories as a slice of bacon and twice as much saturated fat.
Starburst Fruit ChewsCalories: 241
Fat: 5g (Saturated 5 g)
Sodium: 1mg
Candy isn’t exactly health food, we know that, but a little treat now and then is a perfectly acceptable part of balanced diet. But Starburst, those tasty square taffy-esque nuggets of happiness, are surprisingly ALL saturated fat. At least bacon has some healthy fats (and protein).
Caesar DressingCalories: 79
Fat: 8g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 156mg
Choosing between a BLT and a Caesar Salad, go with the BLT! One tablespoon of Caesar dressing (and let’s be honest, who uses just one tablespoon) has almost twice as many calories, three times as much fat and the same amount of saturated fat as a slice of bacon. If your BLT has three slices of bacon and your Caesar salad as 3 spoonfuls of dressing, your choice is pretty obvious.
By the way, that Caesar dressing probably isn’t vegetarian-friendly either.
American CheeseCalories: 105
Fat: 9g (Saturated 6 g)
Sodium: 182mg
A one-ounce serving of American Cheese (a standard slice) has three times as much fat/six times as much saturated fat than a single slice of bacon. Does that make you think twice about your favorite breakfast sandwich?
Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat BranCalories: 197
Fat: 7g (Saturated 3 g)
Sodium: 35mg
Think you’re doing your body a favor by opting for cereal instead of bacon with breakfast? Think again! The only thing this “good for you†cereal has over bacon is fiber—which you can easily get from high quality bread. You can have three slices of bacon with your breakfast and still have fewer calories than this cereal (and don’t forget the added fat and calories from milk).
Turkey BaconCalories: 35
Fat: 3g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 180mg
Turkey bacon may have 7 calories fewer per slice (yes, that’s it, 7) but it has exactly the same amount of fat and sat fat and more than twice the sodium. You’re doing yourself no favors by opting for chopped and formed turkey meat; just go with the real stuff and enjoy your bacon!
