it looks like another one of those conclusions about things that one doesn't know much about.  i believe this is called bias?  like bias against islam?

yoga is simply a discipline, not a religion.  it just happens to be practiced first by hindus, and buddhists to some extent, especially the meditation part.  these two happen to be wisdom religions, not monotheistic ones like christianity, islam, and judaism.

if this theologian believes that yoga as a discipline should not be practiced by christians, then should he also advice against the disciplines of tae bo, aikido or kung fu. 

i've practiced yoga and light meditation before.  i can honestly say that there's nothing in these two that are against any credo and practice of my christian faith.  far from replacing my beliefs, the practice had even enhanced my understanding of my own catholic christian religion.

it looks like mohler as a theologian has forgotten that all major religions come from the east.

Addendum:


The Roman Catholic Church invented the Collegiate System. They invented the Collegium , the University system.
Now, does that mean that all students who attend a university have to be Catholic? Of course not.

Ahmed Mustafa Ibn Muhammad in the University of Istanbul isn't a Catholic because he attends a collegiate system. (emphasis on the name, as a point).

The Protestant Christians that go to college & university does not make them Catholics because they are attending a Catholic-invented/ catholic-organized educational concept. Because they have separated the form and the religion linked to it.

Same thing applies.

di ko familiar sa whole text ani nga hurim-hurim, raqz.  wa tingali ni kinahanglana sa specific practice nga akong gisunod (light meditation).  pero nigamit ug chant nga 'om' or 'aum' only to help settle the mind and body.  the letter 'm' at the end of a syllable has the most number of vibrations (or resonance) when it comes to sound, thus it's soothing.  compare it to mama, where there's no vibration because the letter 'm' is at the beginning of the syllable.  (stretch the word 'ma' and one might as well be a goat.)  i knew then that one can use any word that one is comfortable with.  one need not even use any word or chant at all.

i tried 'god'; the d has no vibration.  'father' is out of the question because of the letter r at the end, which doesn't help the mind and body 'settle down' especially when the 'r' is rolled.

incidentally, in sanskrit om or aum simply means god or creator at its most basic.  no religion is specified in the meaning, just like our 'diyos' or 'bathala' or 'god'.

i found this simple explanation of om.  let me share it thus:

The Meaning of Om    

The ancient syllable "OM" is the shortest of the Mantras and in Indian tradition it is a word suggestive of God.

The scriptures tell us that "OM" is the planets primordial vibration from which the entire universe has arisen. All other sounds are contained within it.

It is believed that "OM" is the mother of all languages. Repetition of "OM" enables us to maintain mental and emotional calmness, overcome obstacles and enable understanding.

An analysis of "OM" as it is written in Sanskrit shows that it is made up of A, U, M and a symbol representing resonance. So "OM" has four aspects.

The first is A, a sound that comes from the belly, is formed in the open throat, and is voiced with the mouth open. As with many alphabets, A is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet.

The second aspect is the U, a sound that is formed in the middle of the mouth. The mouth is not as wide as it is for sounding the A.

With the third sound, M the mouth closes. The sound rises to the nasal passages, from where the resonance, the forth aspect of "OM" issues forth.

It is said that A represents the waking state, U the dream state, and M the state of deep dreamless sleep. The fourth state is the sounds in the resonance following M.

Saying "OM" is actually a form of meditation.

Whosoever knows this syllable obtains all that he desires. This is the best support; this is the highest support. Whosoever knows this support is adored in the world of Brahma."

Hindus believe that OM was the very sound that Brahma ushered when he created creation (in the Hindu sense of creation, not the Christian sense).

But then again, many Hindus believe that the Christian Father God is the same as Brahma and Brahma is the same as Allah (in Islam). The same way as how some neo-Hindus will claim that Jesus Christ was an avatar of Brahma.
