Rosemary for Barbecuing: It's an Herb with Many Health Benefits

By far my favourite herb to use in cooking is rosemary. It's in almost everything I make - I just love the taste and that amazing savoury aroma. When I was staying in California, on the hottest days of the year you could smell the wild rosemary all around you. It always made me hungry!

Rosemary has amazing anti-microbial properties. Its essential oils are often used, in more naturally inclined locales, as an antibacterial solvent. It's also an antioxidant and an antispasmodic, relieving cramps and muscle spasms in the digestive tract. It can also be used as a carminative, removing or preventing gas formation in the gastrointestinal tract.

A cup of rosemary tea has been found to be as effective as aspirin for headaches and other inflammatory symptoms. Rosemary can also protect the body from free radical damage caused by radiation. And if your house smells bad, keeping a rosemary plant indoors acts as a natural air freshener.

If the ever improving weather has left you eying your grill, researchers have recently discovered that rosemary has more to offer than delicious flavour when barbecuing. When meats are cooked on the barbecue they create toxic chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). These HCAs have been classified as human carcinogens that increase the risk of cancer. Researchers found that adding rosemary extract to meats reduced the HCA levels from 30 to 100 percent.

It also turns out that rosemary is a potent "brain protector" due to its natural antioxidant capabilities. One component found in rosemary actually prevents free radical damage to the brain. This active ingredient, known as carnosic acid (CA), may be able to protect the brain from stroke and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and dementia.



Other studies on rosemary have found the herb significantly deactivates excess estrogen, making it a possible preventative treatment for breast cancer. It has also been found to have a protective effect on the components of skin cells which may prevent age-related skin damage like wrinkles. Rosemary also helps to detoxify harmful elements and eliminate them from the liver. Its mild diuretic effects also helps the body with water retention. Rosemary may also help protect DNA from free radical damage.

This little herb should be thought of as more than just something to jazz up your dishes - it's a health promoting miracle.

They are good to grow with basil and tomatoes.

I had almost 10 Rosemary bushes in 2009 but they all died in winter..

As if pud mo luto ko...no, lipay nako inig gawas nako kay humot kaayo. Opposite sad akong bana, hate jud kaayo niya ang baho, mura kunog bahong Lola...wahahahah !


Rosemary has 2 kinds, upright bush and creeping rosemary. They both have very pretty blue flowers and they smell really good. So beautiful pa imong garden, humot pa jud!

One thing I  used to do is crush rose petals and rosemary plus 1 slice of lemon and mao na akong water. Imbento ra gud pud. I got the idea of Rose Water from the local Mediterranean buffet (Kuma jud, kumakaon), mao man ilang gi serve, then rosemary kay humot and lemon kay adik man ko sa lemon.

Kon di ka malipay sa pagtanom-tanom, mopalit na lang tuod. Pero kon gardening imong hobby, dili kabayran ang imong kahimuot nga magtan-aw sa imong tanom nga namuwak o namunga na.

Kon di ka malipay sa pagtanom-tanom, mopalit na lang tuod. Pero kon gardening imong hobby, dili kabayran ang imong kahimuot nga magtan-aw sa imong tanom nga namuwak o namunga na.
Tinuod jud ni Toy. Mahal man pud ning mag gardening hehhehe pero lagi kay hobby man dili nalang kwentahon ang gasto. Mao ni giingon ug dili kabayran ang kalipay sa bunga sa kabudlay. Ug akong bana pa pasultion moingon ug We are spending hundred if not thousand of dollar for the vegetables in the garden that worth 35 dollar total if you buy them in store.
Pero ug magtanum siguro ta ug daghan rosemarie,basil,thyme,mint ug uban pang spices mabawi dagway kay perti pud kamahal ning mga spice oi.

Oops wala ko magdiscourage sa gardening ha nagshare lang ko sa akong point of view heheheh isip usa ka hobbyist sa gardening. Sa atua barato ra maggardening kay mangayo raman tag siddling or kung swertihan hatagan ug seeds sa politico.But ang yuta pud ang problema sa atua kay dili kaayo mo yield sumaa sa atong expectation.
Sa gawas mahal mag gardening kay mopalit pa tag seedlings,mulch,ug uban pang himan.
Gardening to me is expensive hobby but still, it is worth it when I see my children digging in the soil and planting seeds–they are truly learning where their sustenance is coming from, and it comes naturally to them. In this age of mass produced produce, that is an invaluable connection to be made. Self-sustenance is an all-too readily fading thing in our society, and it isn’t something I am readily willing to let go of. That’s why so many of us who love to cook also love to do gardening.
These skills, these acts of self provision, teach us that we don’t always need more than we can yield, and that we can yield enough for us to feel more than satisfied; that the simple things are often the most satisfying. So, I guess I will continue to invest my time and money in gardening and in learning about gardening, so that these skills and these sentiments about life can live on in my own children. I think that’s how many of us feel, and that makes me feel glad and hopeful. And hope is priceless.

Agree jud ko nimo, Raqz. Yes, gardening can be expensive. But speaking of hobbies, I can imagine many other hobbies which are way more expensive than gardening. In my case, I find my hobby expensive because I don't live on the ground (ha ha!). I garden in pots and have to buy potting soil (equivalent of $10 per cubic feet). Sa tamnanan na lang daan, gastos na.

Usa pud sa nakalisod sa tanom-tanom kay lain-lain man og panginahanglan, depende sa tanom. Naay uban nga kinahanglan once a week ra bisbisan, naay uban nga in partial sun ra, naay schedule sa repotting, etc., etc.

Ang pagpamubo usually within TB sessions, mobija una for a break para maka-stretch, to avoid backache...

Sa gawas mahal mag gardening kay mopalit pa tag seedlings,mulch,ug uban pang himan.
Gardening to me is expensive hobby but still, it is worth it when I see my children digging in the soil and planting seeds–they are truly learning where their sustenance is coming from, and it comes naturally to them. In this age of mass produced produce, that is an invaluable connection to be made. Self-sustenance is an all-too readily fading thing in our society, and it isn’t something I am readily willing to let go of. That’s why so many of us who love to cook also love to do gardening.
These skills, these acts of self provision, teach us that we don’t always need more than we can yield, and that we can yield enough for us to feel more than satisfied; that the simple things are often the most satisfying. So, I guess I will continue to invest my time and money in gardening and in learning about gardening, so that these skills and these sentiments about life can live on in my own children. I think that’s how many of us feel, and that makes me feel glad and hopeful. And hope is priceless.

I agree with you, gardening is very expensive specially here in the good old US of A. But there are things we can do to remedy that.  ;)

1.) Online or community garden club.  I am a member of 2 garden forums, the Houston Rose Society, Houston Ginger Society and The Woodlands Garden Club....no, I don't visit the forums very often and I don't show up every month for the monthly meetings....grabe na jud time. BUT...I always read the seed swapping/plant swapping threads or EB threads for plant swaps in person. Also HRS and HGS and even THGC have big plant swaps so I bring my seeds and baby plants for things that I need... HRS is $30 a year, HGS is $30/yr (not current member nako) and TWGC is FREEEEEEEE!!!!

Among things I got...fertilizer, rootone, various pots, various plants, a basket of oranges.. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Ay...older Filipina ladies diay...naka tangag ko ug sugarcane nga buhi tawn kantud ron...seeds pud ug kamunggay nga buhi sad hantod ron. Kun mangayo mo ug seeds sa kamunggay, PM me, ipadala nako via USPS. I love my older friends, ako man ang baby...ako lagi pud kubkub pero ok ra. heheheh !


2. Fertilizer..... coffee grounds will decompose and will give plants a lot of nitrogen. Eggshells will give them calcium ug uban pang nutrients, Banana peels will give them potassium....Epsom Salt, cheap and very useful around the house for various other things is also very good for plants. mura kadakon ug kumo akong mga roses.

Sa akong never ending lang jud nga kabaga (dli obvious), I hit at least 5 starbucks every month kay mangayo ug coffe grounds. They give it to you for free, ila pang ihatod sa imong trunk..o dibs...libre nako fertilizer every month !!! ahahaa !

to my husband's chagrin, i bought 2,000 earthworms ($32) unya akong gihimuan ug balay2. 2 ra gud ka sterlilite nga gipatong2. Tanang mumho, banana peels, bisan nang mga papel nga gibutang sa shredder, tua didto gibutang nako. Mamo, libre na ang akong fertilizer. heheheehh !


3. POTS ...ang dili arte, ok ra ani... go to lowe's or home depot and pangayo-a tong mga pots sa garden center nga basiyo sa mga dead plants. Ila raman na ilabay, ang uban , maka swerte ka, kana pajud mga decorative planter nga mga nindot. Yups, got them for free...


Naa pa daghan, maybe I'll start a gardening thread para maka share2 sad ta.


Remember, "ask and you shall receive"...you'd be surprised what people will just give you for free.  ;)

Here you go...walay manaway ha...wala lang jud ko laing picture ani nga rose. Taken last May 2007, this main stalk produced 16 or 17 flowers. Mao ni resulta sa Epsom salt, saging ug starbucks coffee ground. hahahah !

Hago jud nuon Hap, labi na kung summer, init kaayo, mapagtum jud ug dili oras, mamura ug negra. hahaha !

Mao lagi, depends ra sad ni kung mahuwasan ba imong kahago inig kita sa bunga or buwak...pero kung dili, pag pujo laman.. :-) dili paka mabughat ug di oras. hahahaha !

Kung winter di kapananom kay tugnaw, kung summer init pud kaayo, makapatay pud s atanom :D

naa mga hardcore gardener diri mga silingan nako...sus, nag snow bitaw mi...among street palamuot kaayo tan-awon kay ang mga tanum, gi habulan jud. hahaha ! mabilib sad ka nila oi.

Didto man ko sa bohol pag snow diri, akong bana wala man gyud alamag, namatay tanan 6 nako ka saging..gisapot jud ko...maayo gani kay diha semilia niturok pag spring. Akong motto karon, kung mamatay gani ka, patay kang kagwanga ka, dili nako palit ug lain. Kung mabuhi gani...akong paliwatan. Nganong gasto2 ug ma chugi ra man diay pud. sayang...

Wa man koy abuno abuno sa ahong garden heheheh itisok raman naho unja kalooy sa Ginoo motubo man pud. Ug ang U.S farmers imong pangutan on jud nuon moingon ni sila nga we have the best soil kono sa tibuok U.S labi na sa Central Illinois kay blackdirt jud.Permi bumper crops bisan initon kay mohold man ug moisture ang tambok nga yuta. Kining mga herbs diri ug imo ning itanum murag kugon mokanat kanat mahimo na nuong nuisance kay perti na ka daghan. Rosemary,parsley,basil,mint ug uban pa kung tambok ang yuta perti mabuhi mangtake over pa sahay sa garden.
Last summer naghimo mi ug bar soap among gibutangan ug rosemary.

quel, pa apila ko anang garden club be. Wala pa nuon ko kulang nga seeds pero naa ko daghan sobra malunggay seeds if gusto mo. PM lang sa addy.  ;) ay.... naa diay sad ko mga seeds adtong sili bitaw sa ato nga colorful. kadto naa violet, red, orange, yellow and white, mura purma christmas light sa isa ka punuan. ig ngayo mo, dia ko.

diri sa among dapit, red clay among yuta, pero sa akong gipuy-an specifically, ok2 gamay kay daghan man kahoy ug daghan2 naman sad na decompose. Sandy clay lang jud nuon.
