Note: Patients taking MAO Inhibitors (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) for their depression should take caution in ingesting any aged foods. Do not take MAO-inhibitors with Tyramine Ingestion (Tyramine is found in aged foods such as wine, cheese, beer, aged meats (beef jerky, chicken jerky, ginamos, buwad etc). This can lead to a HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS.
How ?
Monoamine Inhibitors prevents MAO (Monoamine oxidase) from degrading Norepinephrine. Tyramine foods contain a significant amount of Norepinephrine. The combined effect of taking MAO-Inhibitor and Tyramine foods (rich in NE) can lead to an abnormally large concentration of NOREPINEPHRINE in the body ---> SEVERE HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS --- > FATAL
