DOH confirms second case of ingestion of firecrackers

MANILA, Dec. 31 (PNA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed Saturday another case of ingestion of firecracker.
In a press briefing held at East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) in Quezon City, DOH Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial said that in their latest monitoring, the second case was from Navotas City.
The age of the boy was four who ingested a firecracker called 'Pop-pop'.
DOH Spokesperson Dr. Eric Tayag said the child was rushed and managed at Tondo Medical Center on December 30.
Tayag said the firecracker was unintentionally ingested by the child after his brother tricked him to ingest it.
The first case of firecracker ingestion recorded by DOH involved a six-year-old boy from Cainta, Rizal.
The little boy accidentally placed a "luces" between his teeth.
The monitoring began since December 21 and will end by January 5.
In the latest count, as of 6:00 a.m. of December 31, a total of 141 injuries were recorded by DOH from its 50 Sentinel Hospitals.
"This is 34 percent lower than the cases reported for the same period last year," said Ubial.
In her series of rounds, she checked the hospital preparedness in terms of medicines, equipment and duty staffs manning the emergency units to ensure that preparations are in place among government hodpitals.
As she do this she asked the public cooperation to choose safe welcoming of new year through community fireworks displays and use of alternative noisemakers to be away from injuries.
She said that it is important that parents and communities will think of the loses on productivity of the child that will be injured and get life-long disability from firecrackers use. (PNA)
