Hi isles,
A person can get lung cancer or any form of cancer even if one does not smoke. Lung cancer can be precipitated by actively smoking or by second-hand smoke. The reason why cancer occurs is because the smoke in cigarette destroys the body's Delta P-53 Tumor Suppressor Gene. This gene (P-53) is responsible for the destruction of tumor growth in the body. If this gene is destroyed or altered in a way that it can no longer control tumor growth, then there will be higher rates in benign tumor growth. Growth of such tumors can occur in the lung, pancreas, liver, kidney, bone etc. Once this tumor breaches its capsule and enters the circulatory system or through the lymphatic system, it the metastasizes into Cancer.
If you inhale smoke you can destroy the P-53 gene. So if a wife is married to a husband who smokes 1 pack of cigarettes everyday and she is breathing in the smoke everyday, she is effectively subjecting her self to destruction of her p-53 tumor suppressor genes just as her husband who is smoking.
