Thanks esltchr, kindly share with us some of your ideas to make Guindulman town progressive.

Ajaw kuno mo pag jaga-jaga.

Let me also remind everyone that sadly, there will always be devastating consequences of progress that affects historical, ecological and moral/cultural treasures of the place. It is also among the sworn obligation of the mayor to preserve/protect the culture, identity and resources of the town.

There are many innovative and safe means to progress which are even favorable to the fragile eco-system and community.

That is why the Feasibility Study of any development projects incorporates the Environmental Impact Statement, an assessment of the possible impact both positive and negative on the natural, socio-cultural and economic aspect of the recipient community and adjacent areas. This is a pre-requisite before a project can be undertaken especially if it is infra in nature.

The cutting of the trees surely is not recommended when the public market was conceptualized and implemented, however, like pointed earlier these trees blocked the view of the new building.

I believe (and I know I shared the same belief with lots of people here at TB), that there is no amount of justification for such an action, the damage has been done.  However, the local executives, lawmakers, the Guindulmanons should play vital roles in restoring and balancing the eco-system of this municipality.

Of course, we as Boholanos should always play critical to the whole issue and remain vigilant so, situation like this will not happen again in the future. We can make a difference only if we have the will.

Truly, there is no place like home, and we need to protect our home at all cost: it could be painless or painful, but Bohol is our home… we have that obligation whether we like it or not.

Thanks wolf, I believe the best project for a historical town like Guindulman is preservation of historical sites, artifacts and buildings including century old trees. The idea of commercial/industrial progress is out of place.

Before its too late, someone must pass a zoning law for the entire province of Bohol. This will prevent conflict between industrial development and eco-cultural industry.

The best thing for Guindulman is to build a museum to entice tourists and balikbayans. Make the place pleasant, perhaps by making another man-made forest and resurrecting Guindulman's ancient reputation of having lush foliage.

Macky do you know the owner of the website? A tall building near the shore of Guindulman is impossible because of the erosion. gikotkot pag-ayo ang baas unya ga-anam kasaka ang dagat.
What I´m trying to say is that the foundation is not ideal for a tall building, unless they have enough money and technical know-how.

The best thing for Guindulman is to build a museum to entice tourists and balikbayans. Make the place pleasant, perhaps by making another man-made forest and resurrecting Guindulman's ancient reputation of having lush foliage.

When I was 17, I had the opportunity to visit Vigan. I wish I can dig up my pictures of it right now but I can't think where they are off the top of my head. Everybody probably heard of "heritage Village" in Vigan ? It is a huge tourist attraction,  a whole street that looked frozen in time. Old houses from the Spanish Era and its not deserted mind you, it is actually occupied by shops after shops. http://www.philsite.net/vigan.htm

From my recent trip to San Antonio, I learned of this place called Enchanted Springs Ranch where they are "keeping the old west alive"  http://www.enchantedspringsranch.com/. Of course, there's the preserved Alamo in the heart of San Antonio http://www.thealamo.org/

These places draw so many tourists, and even school field trips as they serve an educational value. You can buy souvenirs of all shapes and sizes, from pillows to blankets to mugs, shot glasses, caps, shirts and post cards. Of course, tourists eat....in Vigan, there was the ever famous Vigan Empanada you can buy from the street vendors and for the more discerning, a slew of restos. In both Enchanted Springs and Alamo, there's rows after rows of small restos and delis to chose from for food and well, souvenirs.

What does this mean for Guindulman ? Well  ....

1. Tourists bring money into the town thus translating into more small businesses opening, cottage industry , and even more jobs. read : less unemployment

2. With money coming in, bigger budget for town wide improvement..hopefully for schools, police and public works

3. Shall I say pride for the people who are originally from there ?

4. The tourism could start small and can snowball if managed correctly....there must be some skill that Guindulmanuns are very good at. Maybe embroidered pillowcases ? or basketweaving ? Pottery ? Anything that could be equated like Jagna and Calamay or Muron and Tubigon, or even Ubay and Carabao Milk. Maybe someday, it will be Guindulaman and.....

Even if Guindulman were to just start small with the lush foliage, I think there's enough balikbayan population that a bed and breakfast could work in the middle of newly restored  and replanted trees and flowers. Maybe like the one in Dauis by the church, but also offering lodging, not just food.

Most of the Filipino friends I have want to visit Bohol with me at some point, but if I was from Guindulman, maybe a place like the bed and breakfast I've described above may be the ideal place to take them instead of my parent's home. Big enough, with perks like a hotel but with the feel of home.

They get a taste of what the town is really about. Food from the kitchen that truly reflects Guindulmanun taste. A sprawling garden under the shade of the huge trees and a fragrant garden full of native plants and flowers.

Imagine the pictures that would be posted online from these visits and the snowball effect of " I wanna visit too" even this can generate.  ;)

Alycxs, it will be Guindulman and autographed black pebbles (autographed by world class boxers). As I've said earlier, Boxers are the only product of Guindulman ever since; seriously.

A boxing institute could be built in the middle of nature. What else could invigorate the body but pure oxygen from trees.

Bobby Berna is from Guindulman, right?

I agree, the town can centre its eco-cultural tourism program around it. How? In addition to the boxing institute, how about a boxing museum highlighting the famous boxers of Guindulman, built on the same site?

The site should be a "centre for boxing" complex housing the boxing institute, boxing museum, souvenir shop, municipal tourism office, etcetera.

Also, note where the houses of the boxers stand and put a plaque and then include it in a "famous Guindulman boxers walk" tour.

Can I suggest then that the municipality in coordination with resource persons to come up with a list of the famous boxers with brief biographies/inspirational stories/anecdotes as a contribution to this 'project'?

Re: the boxing complex i suggested earlier, it can be a part of a bigger 'Guindulman Nature Park'. The Park can have picnic areas, playgrounds, jogging areas (footpaths), exercise ground, restaurant, souvenir shop, etcetera. Entrance fee can be free in the Park or a minimum donation except in some areas e.g. parking area. It can be run by public-private consortium.

That is a very good idea Jig. Why force commercialization and industrialization to Guindulman when in reality it is not feasible. Let us see: "Boxing Capital of Bohol"...that is attainable.

i am just building up on macky's idea which is basically about carving a niche market. kanang claim sa guindulman as a 'boxing capital of bohol' is true and i suggest the town officials capitalise on this.

lami unta kon ma-materialise ni unya dunay mo-probe deeper, come up ug proper project proposal. kon wa pay tourism plan ang town mao niy akong isugyot.

i would imagine this project as a public-private initiative.

Basdio * is quite doing well since Bituon Beach resort was established. This commonly caters to German speaking guests since the booking is in Germany. There are also  established diving resorts along this area.
Please visit www.bituon.com. The website sad to say is in German.

*Basdio is the nearest barrio  of Guindulman to Anda. The beaches along this area is comparable to Panglao and the advantage is that, it is still peaceful and very clean

Would it make good snorkling and diving too ? this would be an ideal vacation for those loving the sea but wanting to avoid the craziness in Panglao.

I've not been to Bituon but only to Anda.

 Here's for you MDB!

I get HIGH with a little help from YOU ;) friend! :)

So lets look forward to it.

Manay, I think she will take it in stride, after all, its part of the package for any politicians.

BED AND BREAKFAST

hmmmm....I think there are more than enough entrepreneurial population in Guindulman to pull this off. I also know there's a healthy number of balikbayans from there from my last fiesta there. I just hope they won't make the Bed and Breakfast a government thing, maybe a private organization with concessions from the town but not wholly...I think its safe to say that in the Philippines and in the US, almost anything run by the government usually has a lot of BS.

If it were to be built, maybe in the style of the old Spanish houses with the asbestos or brick roof look. Not sure how safe real asbestos is. They can make it entirely look like an antique house but with all the modern amenities cleverly hidden but accessible. I know this can be done as I had visited a bed and breakfast just like this when I last visited Vigan on a class tour.

The trees may not mature asap but maybe there's a location that they can acquire where its already got the trees and they can employ the right methods of building where they don't harm the surrounding vegetation.

Yups, this should be a very doable and feasible project for those wanting peace and quiet. It can operate on the same principle as Escaya...you don't really pay for the accommodation nor the beach, but rather, the privacy that such prices can ensure.

With the advent of the net, facebook, flickr and all of the picture sites, its easy advertising since per experience, when my friends see where I've been that's really beautiful, they automatically ask where it is and would want to go there. Its effortless....

So, who's going to present all these ideas to the Mayor ?

Manay, you are part of the people whom the mayor serves. A servant should please the master.
