email sent from Fred AmoraTO ALL BOHOLANOS WHO DEARLY LOVE THEIR HOMELAND
I am calling on all of you who cherish our rich socio-cultural heritage, a God-given gift taken care of by our forebears and handed down to us, to help me in a cause to preserve them and protect them from myopic and egocentric public officials.
The case at hand is the infamous ACACIA MASSACRE in the historic town of Guindulman. These century-old trees were cut down by local officials for a ridiculous reason: to give a visual display of a new public market that supposedly is a major accomplishment for these sitting officials.
I am a native of that place, and all of my grandparents, my father and mother and all of my loved ones who have gone before me are buried in that place which I call my hometown. I will also rest my weary soul in that town and hope to the join my foregone folks among the green grass of my homeland.
What happened to the trees in Guindulman could happen anywhere in Bohol and this generation and the next will never see them again. We could not just close our eyes and fold our arms in surrender against public officials who were elected in the guise as servants of the people. It has come to fore that these officials take the public office and the public trust as something of a POWER that they can use to impose their capricious will. As a member also of the print and broadcast media, I cannot allow these. I am sure true blooded Boholanos share the same sentiment that I do.
I may cry a river in the things happening all around us today but that could not help. This wanton disregard of our historic past must be stopped.
I am to file administrative and criminal cases against these officials and authorities of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who conspired in these unlawful acts.
Your moral support will be my strength that will lift me up to go on. Perhaps, if not now, our children and the next generation will remember us, that we made all efforts to prepare a better world for them in their time.
Hope to hear from you all. So help me God!
FRED C. AMORA
