The clamor to institutionalize a sports program for the province is stronger than ever as the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) came to a close Friday.

On Friday's Kita Ug Ang Gobernador, Gov. Edgar M. Chatto congratulated and thanked Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Recaredo Borgonia, Bohol Division Schools Superintendent Dr. Lorna Rances and Tagbilaran City Division Schools Superintendent Norma Varquez for the success of the weeklong CVIRAA hosted by the province. He also thanked municipalities for hosting athletes from 15 cities and 4 provinces in the region.

Chatto stressed the more important aspect of wholistic development of the youth through sports as he answered questions on the provincial athletes' performance during the CVIRAA.

Further underscoring the Provincial Government's efforts to build a stronger sports program for Bohol, Provincial Administrator Alfonso R. Damalerio II reported plans which include amendment of the Bohol Sports Commission.

Damalerio also brought to the table the intent to take advantage of the recently concluded CVIRAA through a post analysis which will help determine the best direction for the province in terms of excellence in sports.

Both Chatto and Damalerio however maintained full support for a sports program as part of strategies towards development.

The Provincial Government allocated P5.5M out of the P8M budget to host this year's regional athletic meet.

Early this year, sports leaders gathered to draft the vision of Bohol Sports, designed to be a comprehensive, sustainable, opportunity directed for the development of budding athletes down from the grassroots level.

Fr. Vic Uy S.V.D., provincial consultant on Sports of the Chatto administration led the one day gathering. Uy was a former commissioner and executive director of Philippines Sports Commission and is presently the regional president of Private Schools Athletic Association.

Among priorities of the Sports program is to upgrade existing Sports facilities, foremost of which is the repair and renovation of the CPG Sports Complex.

Chatto also increased financial aid to district meets to P400,000 and P600,000 to the provincial meet.

DepEd for their part highlighted sports as central to education with top officials gracing the opening ceremonies earlier this week. Undersecretary Atty. Tonisito Umali officially declared the opening of the regional meet along with Assistant Secretary Jesus Lorenzo Mateo.
