Parolees and probationers plant trees
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:02:13 PM »
At least 27 parolees or probationers from the towns of Bilar, Batuan, Carmen, Sierra-Bullones and Pilar actively participated in the tree planting activity on February 15 at the vicinity of the sanitary landfill in Barangay Guadalupe, Carmen.

Parole and Probation Office Head Ricardo Abucejo initiated the activity in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who provided the 1,000 seedlings of mahogany and fruit trees transported by Carmen Municipal mini-dump truck from Bilar nursery to the planting site.

During the activity, Florita Vitor and Adminsitrative Aide James Yam represented the Parole and Probation Office.

Forester II Candido Salces also joined the group check and observe the sanitary landfill area.

Salces asked the municipal information officer to relay to Carmen Mayor Manuel Molina his recommendation that it is best to plant trees at the boundaries for easy identification.

He recommended African tulip, a flower-bearing plant which fits at the corners of the boundaries, while some other flower-bearing plants may be planted at the line area.

I love this Idea.

However, I disagree with choosing the African Tulip. Why not use the sariling atin like Tugas or molave, Narra, Yakal...etc. Why populate our province with foreign trees where infact our native trees are diminishing to the point of extinction. We might know its medicinal benefit only when it is extinct. We never knew if the natural cure for an epedimic like aids is somewhere in our native forest.

Nevertheless, I loved the idea in general.

Good thinking there, Macks!  I think they are planting those African Tulips mainly for aesthetic purposes.  Maybe they can extend this planting project to other areas that's need to be planted with the trees you suggested.  It's really nice to drive with trees along the road.

Grazie,

By the way, I learned from one of our Italian visitor that Grazie means thanks in Italian.

My mother teached in Mangga Elem School when I was about 4 years old. I remembered that Mangga Elementary school was surrounded by big trees until top of the hill. One of the big trees near the gate has a huge leaf, my mother sometimes used it as umbrella. With this tree, a very fragrant vine is growing they called Ilang-ilang. One day there was a scouting night out and that flower emitted a very fragrant smell that filled the whole campus. Until now, I can not forget the lovely smell of the Ilang-ilang. Also I remembered the deafening sounds of 'gangis' or cicada.

It's sad to see that those big indigenous trees are now no more.

Hello Macks!  Yes, Grazie is thanks in Italian!  So that means, I am filled with the feeling of gratitude to all of you, my friends! :D

Macks, if I remember right, we planted some trees in the front and back of the Manga Elementary School.  What do you mean those big trees are now no more?  We don't have those trees anymore in our school in Manga?

Yes, I was not exempted with that Ex Pres. Marcos  Tree planting program as required being a government employee before.  Had planted "Biatilis tress"- (spelling ? I think that was the name of the trees) in front of our small house in Tamblot unja sa ningtubo na gi-angkon sa among silingan nga sija ang gatanom (haskang lalis namo...unja iyang gipang-putol, wa gjoy batasan oi)

Nevertheless, I loved the idea in general.

Grazie, I remembered it vividly when I was four, back in 1970.

If I am mistaken, perhaps they look big because I was small that time. Haha.

Macks, the trees were still big when I was much bigger already when I came home in 2002. ;D

Bitaw, I hope they still have those beautiful trees!  I remember our poem which we also used to sing with our Grade 3 teacher, then Ms. Paredes, entitled A Tree:

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
