A total of 2,845,376 seedlings of various tree species have been planted in the entire Central Visayas with corresponding total allotment of P13,830,000 in connection with the National Greening Program of President Benigno Aquino III, said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office VII.

The DENR accomplishment report delivered as part of the agenda of the full council meeting of the Regional Development Council held last week at the Bohol Tropics Resort Club posted a whopping 97 percent of the total 5,443 hectares planted out of the targeted 5,632 hectares.

The report said that the ambitious greening project was a success and could be considered sustainable based on indicators, such as high participation rate of the people's organizations, private agencies aside from government agencies and local government units in planting and maintenance. It said that the planted seedlings survival rate was placed at 85 percent healthy within the 3-5 month period of cultivation.

Total number of seedlings production in CV was placed at 3,756,997 out of 2,816,000 seedlings targeted or 133 percent attainment. Estimated cost of cultivating each seedling is pegged at P11 while the planting and monitoring activities at P2,455/hectare and P150.90/hectare, respectively, the report said.

Negros Oriental province had the bulk of planting tree seedlings with a total of 1,155,587 or 99 percent in1,853 hectares; Cebu, 945,081 or 100 percent in 1,957 has.; Bohol, 644,708 or 92 percent in1,433 hectares; and Siquijor, 100,000 or 80 percent in 200 hectares.

Accomplishments of each province in the region varied in terms of seeds availability, kind of materials requirement, capabilities/attitudes of participating entities, climactic condition, distance of planting sites, release of funds, mobility hauling of seedling materials, manpower requirement, planting sites within the protected areas requires indigenous species and involvement of the local government units.
