Magnificent 7 Project in Bohol
« on: October 05, 2011, 07:50:33 AM »
by EDCOM

Called by its proponents as the Magnificent 7, the Agriculture Training Institute (ATI)-Central Visayas, Bohol Agricultural Promotions Center of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bohol Field Office, Bohol Provincial Science and Technology Center of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Bohol Provincial Trade and Industry Office of the DTI, Bohol Provincial Office of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (BCCI), have pledged allegiance and unconditional support to this booming cottage industry in the province.

The project was set up under the Great Women Project (GWP) of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) with Emmeline Verzosa as Executive Director; and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) headed by Luke Myers, and consequently implemented by the Jagna Sustainable Micro-Enterprise Development (JaSMED) Unit.

JaSMED provides quality gender responsiveness services to improve the quality of life of micro-entrepreneurs focused on women.

“We call this the Calamay Convergence for the surest way to success is when agencies work together,” Chatto said.

With convergence as the key, these seven agencies are now partners with the Office of the Congressman of the Third District Arthur Yap, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Jagna, the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), and the Jagna Calamay Makers Cooperative (JACAMACO), the target group of the convergence.

LGUs usually resort to convergence as a support mechanism for sustainability and with Jagna being considered as the province’s “gateway to Mindanao,” it is very important that focus be given to product innovation through continuous research and development to expand the market.

This “marriage” among the stakeholders which is geared towards the empowerment of women has the absolute and serious commitment of everyone involved ever since its conception in March 2009 when it started its three-year uphill climb, a journey towards its realization.

Fondly called The Jagna Experience by its proponents, every agency is putting in its expertise to help in every way it can to boost the national economy and reduce poverty in Bohol.

The Chatto-Lim Administration has shelled out P700,000.00 as financial assistance for the equipment needed for the Common Service Facility in Brgy. Can-upao which had its ground-breaking ceremony and capsule-laying last Sunday.

Same day also saw the MOA signing of all its stakeholders for the support of the JACAMACO which fittingly coincided with the Jagna Agri-Product and Farmers’ Funfair 2011 within the municipal hall grounds.

The Provincial Government is now looking into the possibility of giving these micro-entrepreneurs access to credit thereby encouraging the private sector to give its usual support for this local joint-venture which has every reason and opportunity to succeed and be acknowledged globally.
