Longer Brownouts in Bohol Province
« on: June 13, 2010, 08:15:46 AM »
By the Bohol Chronicle

Dark days in the neighboring provinces seemed to have spilled over to Bohol, finally, as the brownouts had grown more frequent and longer during the last 36 hours.

The latest lasted for over an hour late afternoon yesterday, the second longest to the May 19 brownout which lasted almost four hours.

Tagbilaran City experienced three brownouts yesterday- -one in the morning, one after lunch and in the late afternoon.

The spokesperson of Bohol Light Company, Inc. even said their consumers must be thankful that the situation here is not as worst in the neighboring provinces where the everyday brownouts would last four to six hours.

The brownouts caused delays in several tasks that rely on power supply like those that involve computers and appliances in the offices and residences.

This came after the assurance of President Arroyo in February that by March after the inauguration of Cebu Energy Development Corporation (CEDC), the neighboring province of Cebu would have stable power supply with additional 250-megawatts.

The Mindanao areas have also been experiencing daily brownouts of four to six hours.
Brown outs started hitting Bohol when the election was approaching but by a matter of minutes only, with an hour being the longest then.

The situation has been observed to have worsened with the brownouts getting longer and more frequent.

It has become daily here.

Power shortage has been blamed on the insufficient reserves in the Visayas grid and the aging power plants. The hydro electric plants are also affected due to low water level following the absence of rains during the past months.

Gov. Erico Aumentado, for his part, has negotiated with the TRANSCO- -now National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, for the implementation of Bohol Backbone Transmission Project costing about P1.6 billion.

The outgoing governor said it could "enhance Bohol's power distribution from 69 kilovolts to 138 KV with high tension overhead steel towers from the Leyte-Bohol Interconnection Project-Ubay substation to the new station in Corella.
