International Day for Biodiversity in Bohol
« on: June 07, 2010, 04:14:06 AM »
International Day for Biodiversity was celebrated last May 22, 2010 with the theme "Biodiversity is Life. Biodiversity is our Life". Year 2010 is also the International Year for Biodiversity.

What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity means the variety of life forms found on earth, all species of plants and animals, microorganisms and the intricate ecosystems they form.

Why conserve them? They are sources of food, construction materials, medicines and also source of beauty and pride. Plants help maintain fresh air, prevent floods and animals act as seed dispersal agents and pollinators like birds and insects.

What are the threats to their decline? Habitat destruction, Wildlife over-exploitation, pollution, global warming, and lack of awareness.

How can we help to conserve them? Keep the environment clean and green; don't buy endangered wild plants and animals, their by-products and derivatives; follow the environmental laws; report any illegal activity and help in the information dissemination.

In celebration of Biodiversity Day, DENR-Bohol conducted mangrove planting in Poblacion, Maribojoc last May 21, 2010. It was participated by DENR personnel, Philippine Coastguard led by CPO Liduvino Inting, Shell employees headed by Alfred Araco, BLGU Officials of Poblacion, Maribojoc led by Brgy.
