Bohol Governor Edgar M. Chatto leads an official delegation to Gyeongju City, Kyungbok, Busan, South Korea on February 23-26, 2012.

In the weekly KITA UG ANG GOBERNADOR, Gov. Chatto reported to the Boholano people thru skype, that this visit will enhance foreign relations of the province of Bohol and Gyeongju City which is the oldest city of South Korea with strengths in the fields of environment, education, agriculture, culture and tourism. Gyeungju City is basically an agricultural city which showcases the complete value chain of agricultural technologies on crops and livestock..

Gyeongju City is also the birth place of the South Korean Saemul Undong ( which means “small new village”) – a rural based movement in the country which is considered by the Koreans as the primary vehicle in the change of attitudes and minds of the marginalized people in the mainstreaming Korean agriculture, culture, education, health, environmental management fields. “The movement embraced values of time, sense of pride and passion for service and change”, the governor added.

Gov Chatto is optimistic that the success stories of Korean Saemul Undong movement can provide good learnings and practices in Bohol through the development of our countryside in the province through the Purok Power Movement and various cooperatives.

Gov Chatto also set official meetings with the city officials of Gyeungju and benchmark some replicable programs and projects of the city like their waste management facility, landfill and recycling factory; agricultural projects like the greenhouses, natural cow and swine production, organic and natural gardens, agri-fishery product distribution centers, agri equipment factories and interaction with local universities.

They also visited a rice processing center that would be similar to our center in the municipality of Pilar. “Said facility, like in Korea, would surely increase efficiency in rice production and improve the quality of our rice”, Chatto stressed.

The governor’s delegation is composed of Bohol Island State University President Dr. Elpidio Magante, Agricultural Promotions Center Chief Engr Eugene C. Cahiles, BISU Bilar Campus Director Dr. Dioscoro Avergonzado, and Mr. Larry M. Pamugas, Officer In Charge, Provincial Agriculture the Office.

Last week, the Governor met with Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Hye Min Lee at the Korean Embassy in Manila to discuss matters on the partnerships of Bohol with Korea.

It can be noted that the team of Korean delegates headed by Assemblyman Lee Do Sun and other Saemul Undong officials also visited our province last December, 2011. The delegation also met Provincial Officials led by Gov Chatto and local partners in agriculture, education and tourism.

As an offshoot of such visit, initial agreements were discussed between the Province of Bohol and the Korean counterparts. An agreement was likewise forged between the Bohol Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (BOFAMCO) and the Sungdong gu Saemul Undong of South Korea. (EDCom)
