Electrical Power for Bohol Islands
« on: December 11, 2007, 12:14:48 AM »
The Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) of the National Power Corporation (Napocor) is finalizing preparation for its takeover of the energy generation in the islands that will lengthen service time and reduce power rate there by almost half.

Rep. Edgar Chatto got the commitment of no less than Napocor Pres. Cyril Delcallar to effect the turnover of island power operation from the Bohol Electric Cooperative (Boheco) to SPUG early of 2008.

The “mercy mission” of SPUG, a Napocor division, will ease the burden of island power consumers who presently pay almost double the power cost of Boheco in mainland Bohol.

Chatto talked to Delcallar and Napocor Vice Pres. Boy Marcelo upon his arrival in Manila from the 17th General Assembly of the United Nations – World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Colombia, South America where he headed the Philippine delegation.

Boheco I and II General Manager Carlos Itable said in the recent meeting of Bohol mayors in Catigbian that the initiative of the First District solon is greatly beneficial to the living condition of the islanders.

Marcelo assured Chatto of the definite operation by SPUG within the first quarter next year, adding that the needed budget has been secured following Boheco’s submission of complete technical requirements.

The First District islands, which have as many barangays, to be covered by the subsidized, missionary electrification of Napocor thru SPUG are Pamilacan in Baclayon, Balicasag in Panglao, Cabilao in Loon, Mantatao in Calape, and Bilangbilangan, Ubay, Mocaboc, Batasan and Pagaspasan in Tubigon.

In Cabilao, for example, Boheco I charges P13 per kilowatt hour which can be reduced to once SPUG takes over. Power service time there is only six hours at night---or even shorter.

Even with the present cost, Boheco I has been subsidizing the power generation in the islands, making its operation hard to sustain, Chatto told the local media. -- www.theboholstandard.com
