In its sustaining program of going pro-active against crime and prevention of it, Army’s Civil Relations Service [CRS] conducted series of symposia on drugs in crime prevention and campus gangsterism, and last Thursday, the team was at the Loon Institute [LI] to appraise students of the threat of the stalking danger.

Air Force Msgt. Narciso Tabaniag Jr. said the CRS has gone into the measure knowing that crimes and drug-related problems usually happen due to lack of education and improper guidance of students.

In Loon, close to 130 senior students listened and actively participated at the discussions on drug addiction and its effects given by Msgt Tabaniag and Ssgt. Cris Barcinas, as well as the on new threat of campus gangsterism and an orientation on the anti-hazing law by a staff from the Philippine Information Agency.

School Principal Engr. Ma. Antonoitte Recamadas said she appreciated the effort because she has seen the threat of drugs and illegal organizations in several schools and realized any help they can get would be appreciated.

Giving the students the pep talk, Msgt. Tabaniag, who came in full military uniform said there is only one way that the students can get to realize their dreams and their parent’s aspiration and that is to stay away from the lure of drugs. Instilling his point, he said drugs can only mean jail, hospital or cemetery.

On the other hand, a PIA staff told students that any school organization that insists in putting the applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating situation such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish and similar tasks or subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering or injury as an initiation rite to a group is already tantamount to hazing.

While belonging to a group could help a student develop his talents and capabilities, getting into suspicious groups that demand subservience may be a dip into a pool that could be too hard for them to get off, the PIA staff said.

The threat of hazing, aside from being banned by a specific law is also against the national policy on the protection of children and minors who get to be inflicted with embarrassing tasks or sometimes inflicted physical harm without the school authorities getting informed, the resource person shared.

During the open forum, the CRS men also responded to questions on the state of insurgency in the area, the truth on the legal front organizations, the guile of unscrupulous groups roaming the barangays and the salient points on the military’s recruitment program.
