Contractors investing millions in heavy equipment are now elated that they can now send personnel to a skills trainings to lessen company losses in unnecessary equipment breakdowns due to improper use.

In its attempt to supply skilled construction workers especially on heavy equipment operations and preventive maintenance, the Department of Trade and Industry [DTI] brings in the Construction Training Center [CONSTRAC].

Department of Trade and Industry [DTI] Regional Director Asteria Caberte said the series of capability building trainings for construction workers and construction company personnel is hoped to respond to the need for properly skilled workers to complement the projected boom in the construction industry.

CONSTRAC can either be center based or on-site training program using a specially designed module to equip workers with the skills, technology and the knowledge on the equipment they would be dealing in their fields of endeavor, says DTI Deputy Executive Director Florencio Sison.

Trainings can be done on site or at the partner academic institutions. A team is sent to supervise the training and supervises the participants on site so it can cut costs of the schooling modules. Graduates of the training get TESDA, DPWH or DOLE accreditations, Don Bosco’s dean Fr, Eugene Maglasang pointed out.

Moreover, CONSTRAC also offers skills upgrading courses on rough carpentry, building wiring, masonry and concreting, finishing carpentry and form works or project management modules.

According to DTI TIRD Chief Ally Josh Carol Ventura, Constrac’s vision is to provide innovative construction manpower solutions in the Visayas and aims to be the frontrunner in providing construction related courses that will develop and upgrade our manpower skills in the construction industry.

With the manpower training programs, we will be able to improve productivity of the construction industry sector, Caberte said during the formal launching rites at the Bohol Tropics Resort, Tuesday, July 30.

The project has long been in the pipelines especially when it is recognized that there is a need to bring construction related courses and manpower innovations, she said during her welcome remarks at the rites.

Bohol Contractors’ Association president Engr. Ismael Malgar said now local construction firms can invest in personnel for an accredited training and save cash on the length of service of their equipment for the proper use.

Filling the government training resources lack, CONSTRAC meets by pooling local resources of stakeholders.

Partnering with DTI are Construction Manpower Development Foundation [CMDF], Technical Education and Skills Development Authority [TESDA], the Department of Public Works and Highways and local government units engineering and motor pool departments as well as private organizations such as Association of Carrier Equipment Lessors Inc. [ACEL], network of professional organizations and the academe such as Don Bosco Training Center, Caberte said in her speech.

Bohol Contractors’ Association president Engr. Ismael Malagar said it is high time that trainings such as these come because the companies can save millions in equipment repairs and keeping wastage at the minimum due to improper skills.
