Together with the rest of the country, the province of Bohol celebrated Climate Change Consciousness Week from November 19 to 25.
Instituted through Proclamation No. 1867, the observance of Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week is aimed to create greater awareness in the country on global warming and climate change through broad and intensive information and educational campaigns.
It is also intended to secure the collective cooperation of all citizens and the collective action of private and public sectors at all levels in finding solutions to the threats of a changing climate.
The provincial government has incorporated climate change in its thrusts under the HEAT Bohol development framework, where proactive and adaptive strategies and responses to climate change are instituted through local projects and programs, especially in the concerns of environment, agriculture, education, technology, sanitation, and infrastructure.
As a testament to this, in July this year, the province was recognized as an omnibus Learning Destination for Good Environmental Governance by the EcoGov 2, an ecological governance project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), because of the highly adoptable environment programs in the province, such as those exemplified by the towns of Talibon, Jagna, Duero, and San Miguel, among others.
This year’s observance of Climate Change Consciousness Week is centered on the theme: Creating Convergence on Climate Change, with a conference, exhibit, and concert held on November 21 and 22 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
The national observance was spearheaded by the Climate Change Commission in partnership with the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation and also featured climate change workshops for the youth and media and public information offices of government agencies.
Also held were a matching of the banking sector agenda with local low-carbon, climate-resilient development programs of local government units and a cabinet cluster meeting on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
