VICE-GOV. Julius Herrera has lauded the efforts of various local government units in the province for responding to his campaign for green revolution though backyard gardening and greening the environment.
Like in Guindulman town, Mayor Maria Fe Piezas has signed and approved Municipal Ordinance No. 2009-25, requiring elementary and secondary graduating students of both public and private schools of this town to plant at least two fruit-bearing trees as a pre-requisite for their graduation.
The Guindulman measure aims at “instilling among the in-school youth the values of responsibility, resourcefulness, reliability and love Mother Earth.†It intends to sustain food supply and family income-generation. It also tries to integrate and put in curriculum of the DepEd in Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) for elementary level and the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) for high schools.
The vice-governor, chair of the agriculture committee of the provincial board, also expressed appreciation of similar efforts of the well-meaning officials of Catigbian, Batuan and Mabini for spearheading a more specific step towards attaining greening the environment.
With the examples of these towns, Herrera said he hopes that others will follow suit.
Catigbian through Mayor Bert Salinas passed an Ordinance requiring graduating public school students to plant trees and gardening. This is also in the town of Batuan .
In Mabini, every household is required to plant malunggay considered the most nutritious vegetable.
Herrera also took notice of the proposed barangay ordinance governing backyard gardening during the recent Training on Barangay Legislation which his office has conducted in the town of Maribojoc .
He said this is a very welcome development because greening environment and backyard gardening are simple but effective means of cushioning the impact and mitigating global warming that becomes erratic. This is an indication that people and barangay officials are more and more conscious of these occurrences on climate change.
The vice-governor vowed to carry this (campaign) when given more years to serve the Boholanos. (RVO)
