Bohol Water (BWUI) Facing Tough Times?

Bohol Chronicle

Officials of the Bohol Water Utilities, Inc. worry that the lingering crisis can lead to revenue failure in offsetting the rising operational cost of one of the country's most efficient providers of cheapest quality water today.

The imminent fear does not discourage them, however, from further improving the already exceptional BWUI service which has become the trademark of Bohol's number one water enterprise.

It will, on the contrary, challenge the BWUI to achieve its corporate vision to be a dynamic partner for Bohol development as the utility gears for its eighth year on August 28, said BWUI general manager Engr. Romeo Robles.

Robles urged their valued consumers to cooperate in conserving water, a basic commodity delivered affordably here but valued more than gold in other places.

The prices of most commodities have skyrocketed but the BWUI rates remain among the cheapest imposed by the many water districts nationwide.

Robles encouraged the public to report any water leakage and pilferage that contribute to system's loss.

In the wake of the extortionate cost of fuel affecting the generators of economy, the BWUI is bound to maintain lesser operation expenses without sacrificing service quality even if it collects lower water tariff.

This is the obtaining situation pending the implementation of any reasonable increase.

An Asian Institute of Management (AIM) research suggests that BWUI is one of the country's most admired water districts in an overall aspect largely defined by competent service and affordability of rates.

The BWUI falls in the category of a water district, which is distinct from rural waterworks systems.

BWUI's existing minimum charge at only P65 for the first 10 cubic meters of water consumed is cheapest by a water district in the country.

It is lower than the P90 and P98 respectively imposed by the water districts of Carcar in Cebu and Zamboanga City.

Most consumers use an average of 30 cubic meters of water a month, in which bracket the BWUI still tops involving rate affordability at an existing P232.60 per 30 cu.m. as against Carcar's P310 and Zamboanga City's P320. (The Carcar and Zamboanga charges have now even gone higher following the approval of their rate increases.)

The BWUI has a pending application for P75 minimum rate (first 10 cu.m.) and P332.25 per 30 cu. m. which, if imposed, will still be among the five lowest rates charged by water districts in the country.

The water district of Meycauyan in Bulacan values its minimum water consumption at P384 and for every 30 cu.m. at P1,266.50.

The utility in Santiago City, also in Region 3 like Meycauayan, charges P987 per 30 cu.m. while Masbate's water district imposes P910.50.
