Bohol Transparency Network for Transformation (Bohol TNT)

Multi-sectoral support and advocacy for transparency and accountability in government transactions poured in for Bohol Transparency Network for Transformation (Bohol TNT) during its launching on June 15, 2011 at JJs Seafoods Village Restaurant here.

Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II, who represented Gov. Edgar Chatto, told Bohol TNT to count the provincial government part of the group’s advocacy in advancing transparency and accountability in local governance. He said the province expressed commendation to the group’s cause and as friendly watchdog in good governance, which Gov. Chatto’s is strongly espousing.

Businessman Ku Beng Sun, who represented the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), hastened to say, “we highly support and we give our 100% to transparency” advocacy of Bohol TNT. He, however, reminded everybody, “we should not be indifferent and complacent” with what Bohol has become.

Also, statements of solidarity and commitment were heard from the Philippine National Police, the youth and the non-government organizations and the media with Mr. Leo Odtohan of the National Union if Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Bohol chapter during the same activity.

The Church represented by Rev. Fr. WArli Salise of the Social Action Center also expressed support to the cause but he stressed that the Church is batting, time and again, for clean and responsible voting despite the fact that sometime it becomes “almost hopeless” to correct the ills of electoral exercises. But the church will not stop, he said.

Atty. Raul Barbarona, president of Bohol Alliance of NGOs, said that this advocacy in making the government in all levels to spend public funds in right direction and development is a challenge to everybody. This is a tall order for everyone, he added.

Mr. Alan Davis of the Philippine Public Transparency Reporting Project and director of Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) said that the advocacy is “about people power” even as he expressed gratitude to the participants for the launching of Bohol TNT.

He said that Bohol TNT, being a watchdog on governance, is not anti-government but “we need to be vigilant in corruption” where and when government agencies failed.

Ms. Linda Paredes, one of the prime movers in organizing Bohol TNT, said that being a friendly watchdog is to help government to be transparent in all its transactions because it’s the people’s money it spends and development at stake.

She said the group is “not fault-finder,” and “not an investigator” but to help the government do their job and “walk towards righteousness” according to the Bible. (RIC V. OBEDENCIO)
