By Bohol Standard

Bohol’s quick response unit, the Telephone and Radio Systems Integrated Emergency Response or more popularly known as TaRSIER117, got big boost as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) turned over financial aid to Gov. Edgar M. Chatto.

In a dinner on Monday, DOST Sec. Mario Montejo turned over a check worth half a million pesos to Chatto for TaRSIER117’s operations and facilities.

Part of DOST’s mandate is disaster prevention and mitigation through the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System under Republic Act 10121 also known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010. The agency is also a member of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) of Bohol.

TaRSIER117 has been in operation since March 25, 2011 and has effectively responded to numerous emergencies, even receiving regional recognition from the Bureau of Fire Protection for the unit’s commitment to the agency’s fire-safe community campaign.

Chatto with Provincial Administrator and in charge of the PDRMMC Alfonso R. Damalerio II also welcomed to the province on his first official visit, University of the Philippines President Alfredo Pascual.

Montejo and Pascual were here in the province to attend the 3rd National Conference on Harmful Algal Blooms/Red Tide and East Asia HAB 7 Workshop conducted by the Marine Science Institute of UP Diliman, a 6-day forum which opened on Tuesday at the Bohol Tropics Resort this city.

Montejo assured Chatto that DOST is willing to partner with Bohol not just in the area of disaster management but also through provision of water level sensors and rain gauges and even 3D mapping, a collaboration with the UP College of Engineering for land use planning as a solution to flood problems.

He also declared possible partnerships in other related endeavors such as education, talking about a possible mirroring of curriculum with Philippine Science High School, environmental protection such as coral restoration and went on to mention priority program of sustainable development in countryside through technologies for the creation of world class products and technical support for the ICT industry.

“You must be doing something good here,” said Montejo as he again committed DOST’s help, while commending Bohol’s leaders for environmental consciousness consistent with its development thrusts.

For his part, Pascual echoed UP Diliman Chancellor Caesar Saloma’s word of the UP system’s full support for Bohol’s pursuit of progress and development with policies grounded on scientific studies and proper consultations.

The UP President guaranteed the collaboration between Bohol and the entire UP system, citing as example a possible tie up with UP Manila in primary health care profiling for improved health service delivery.

The Provincial Government under Chatto’s leadership has had numerous partnerships with UP in terms of consultations with policies and programs in tourism, agriculture, environment and just recently a collaboration with UP Los Banos on native chicken production among others.
