This coming sunday morning (5/03/09) is a big day for our country as our very own Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao (the best boxer in the world and the current # 1 pound for pound in the rating) is fighting against England's Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton in Las Vegas, Nevada. Usually the brit fans are very noisy and loud just like that of a football game.

Sounds fair and good rendition of the Philippines National Anthem by Martin. This is the first time a male singer will sing the lupang hinirang.

Martin Nievera is expecting the Pinoys to be serious when the anthem is sung? Look how he sings, this is the national anthem of our country not a pop song! Plus the diction is americanized, maajo pa maninda nalang siya ug tangkong sa Amerika.

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas !!!

Bitaw, kini ato mga opinion ra man ni. Almost Filipino singers who performed the anthem for Pacman's previous fights gathered criticisms here and there. There was only one who in my opinion did it well - Ms. Lanie Mesalucha. In fairness to Martin, he's doing good. Well see this coming sunday.

I feel that our national anthem be sung with sincerity, in Martins case, he is so americanized, singing this song for the Pacman´s fight, mosakay lang siya sa kasikatan nianing okasyona , this is a big fight and this will be written in history. I don´t like him, siguro malakas at may kapit sya kay Ate.

I concur, Mr. Bedo, Lanie performed really well! Powerful kaayo to.

I was in college when I saw that fight, and I remember I had the volume up high. My room mates asked, "What is she singing."

Proudly I reiterated, "Philippine Anthem."

The Philippine National Anthem is very powerful kaayo~ The lyrics are so beautifully written. Regal.

I thought so too. It's just that he has that accent but he is as proud Filipino as we are. I like his little speech too.

Martin has a really regal voice, he's almost in between soprano and tenor which gives him that 'umpft' haha.

in fairness, Martin sang it with passion. in my opinion, i don't think he was doing a modification (i.e. something that doesn't make the Anthem recognizable anymore) of the tune. he only enhanced it. it indeed is different when a singer like Martin performs on stage. but we cannot question his sincerity of his singing on behalf of all the Filipino people watching the fight this weekend, just because he sang it the way we normally don't do.

one should see how some Canadians and Americans sing their anthems respectively in games like NFL, NHL and NBA; Martin's performance is way way conservative in comparison. but the people of these nations, known still for their passion and love of the country, truly enjoy every word of it--be it sung by someone like an angel or a devil from hell (pardon for such comparisons).

i do believe people wouldn't mind after all how it's being sung, when the bell starts and the action begins to boil. but i still have to produly see how it's being sung, because it will be performed for our National pride's sake and for national unity--at least during the whole duration of the fight.

I grew in school where singing our national hymn is truly a sincere and patriotic act, thatÂ´s why I feel it repugnant when a pop singer sings this like a pop song, naa pa ang iyang kamot ga kapay-kapay, he could have stand straight and sing without closing his eyes morag gilami-an ( sorry )

i remember when we were in school, some students made fun of the lyrics of the anthem by substituting words. most changed part is "ang mamatay nang dahil sa 'yo = ang mamatay ilubong sa menteryo." how we measure sincerity, i think, is not how well or how seemingly different one singing it; it's fundamentally a personal matter. IMO.

I spent my elementary education in a public school, Tambo Elementary School in Paranaque. The teachers are really dedicated. Anything related to our country´s history, heroes, and especially the national anthem was learned and sung by heart. I know that I belong to the older generation but I don´t forget what my school instilled in my mind.

they say when the heart is full the mouth speaks.

i find many artists proudly singing their national anthem; though they could have sung it normally, and save for any personal agenda, they usually sing with much flare because their hearts are so full of passion and pride. i could feel how proud they must be, having been asked to do it for the country.

can't imagine how happy one must be when he/she sings with millions of viewers around the world.

the singing of the Anthem doesn't decide the outcome of the fight, though. since, it's decided by how good Manny or his opponent is, let's hope and pray Manny will come out the victor for our country, for our National Pride we wave through our singing of the anthem and waving the Philippine flag.
