MANILA, Philippines -- An entry from the Philippines has been adjudged Best Documentary Film in the 34th Brussels International Independent Film Festival held recently in that city.

In her report to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Cristina Ortega said “Neo-Lounge,” a film directed by Joanna Vasquez-Arong won the judges’ nod in the festival held Nov. 11 at the Centre Culturel Jacques Franck.

The film portrays the effects of the SARS outbreak on people’s lives.

Vasquez-Arong has written several documentaries on China and is working with a nongovernment organization while pursuing her career as a filmmaker.

Another Filipino film titled “Foster Child” was also featured in the festival.

It was not included in the competition, however, since its director, Brillante Mendoza, was a member of the filmfest’s international jury.

Twelve other entries from India, Turkey, Thailand, Canada, Indonesia, Cambodia and Morocco competed in the festival.

The Brussels International Independent Film Festival, which was started in 1974, provides international exposure for Filipino artists and filmmakers. Actress Gina Pareño bagged the Best Actress award for the film “Kubrador” last year.
