Janina
Newly-crowned Binibining Pilipinas-World winner Janina San Miguel is unfazed by intense criticism of her lousy grammar during the competition's question and answer portion.
A YouTube clip showing her verbal faux pas on national television has already passed the half-million mark in views, and the comments about the clip fairly sizzle with scathing remarks ridiculing her. Many of those comments, however, were also written in atrocious grammar as well.
San Miguel told ABS-CBN's Star Patrol however, that she remains proud of her achievement and said it's not such a far cry from the accomplishment of her idol, the equally linguistically-challenged Melanie Marquez, who launched a successful showbiz career after winning the 1979 Miss International title.
Marquez, who delivers her malapropisms with aplomb and inexplicable dignity, even authored a book collecting her best quotes, titled "Don't Judge Me, I'm Not a Book".
Two choice quotes from that volume include "I will not stoop down to my level" and "I don't eat meat. I'm not a carnival." She meant "carnivore", of course.
Broadcast ambition
The 17-year-old San MIguel said that she aspires to a career in broadcast journalism, the reason for her taking up a course in mass communications at the University of the East.
"Kaya nga po ako nagte-take ng broadcasting, more than willing ako matuto ng English, kasi gusto ko maging reporter gaya nyo," she told Star Patrol's Marie Lozano in Taglish.
(That's why I'm taking up broadcasting. I'm more than willing to learn English because I want to be a reporter like you.)
San Miguel said that she now laughs off what happened, explaining that part of her problem in answering the question from pageant juror Vivienne Tan was that she didn't hear the query quite clearly.
"Ang narinig ko lang 'family' at 'pageant' (I only heard 'family' and 'pageant')," she said.
Tan had asked San Miguel what role her family had played in her (San Miguel) decision to join the pageant.
Nevertheless, San Miguel said that she is dead set on bringing honor to the country once she vies for the Miss World Pageant which is scheduled in seven months.
She said that what happened to her is a truly unforgettable experience.
"Wala po, history na po yun. History na po...at ako yun (That's all right, it's part of history. It's history... and it's me)," she said.
Let's hope she meant that she's part of history and not, well, hist
