Teacher with cancer seeks help

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Sunday, September 15th, 2013

RODELAS

Glenda Ramos Rodelas, 34, a public school teacher in Rosario, Batangas, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer early in 2010.

She immediately underwent chemotherapy but in July this year, a tumor was found in the right portion of her chest. She was again advised to undergo chemotherapy which would cost her P268,800.

Rodelas, who has two children, is asking Inquirer readers for help so that she gets the treatment she needs.

A Grade 1 teacher at Salao Elementary School, she is currently on sick leave. Her husband, a construction worker, earns barely enough for the family’s basic needs.

Those interested in helping Rodelas can call 0928-4781210 or 0917-5233869.

Donations can be deposited through the UCPB account of her cousin, Franco Emman Von M. Cena, with account number 2511016480.

sa akong na obserbahan, most of teachers suffered breast cancer and diabetes mellitus type 2.. mao gyud ng kasagaran nilang sakit.. nagto-o ang mga tao nga goiter kasagaran sa ilang sakit, pero no, talagsa ra na.. Every year especially Teacher's day, ang DepEd naga grant ug P10,000 assistance sa mapili nila nga teacher nga naa'y grabeng sakit, and most sa mga reports namong nadawat (with pictures pa gyud na) Breast Cancer is the number 1 killer.. looy pod intawn mga teachers..

perhaps this goes to show that teaching is a stressful job.  coupled with possible poor diet and exposure to pollution, the stage is set.

i can understand the 10k gift.  it's a way of distributing meager resources.  but it's good only for 2 or 3 laboratory tests.  full treatment of breast cancer from a to z is more than 1M.  where could teachers get that?

health insurances, in the case of those lucky enough to have more, including philhealth, may cover only a total of 1/4 the needed amount.  truly, any teacher would need to scrape more in order to survive the disease.

tita is right. its up to the individual who wants to contribute / donate to a cause. pariha sa parable of the old woman and the rich man. cancer, indeed, is a terrible thing to fight, but with the right support (mental, spiritual, physical [medical]) then it is a fight that is bearable.

yes, breast cancer is, indeed, attributable to women. even in the united states, jenneth-senpai, the leading cause of death for women is cancer (breast, then lung) and then second is cardiovascular related. cancer can arise from the mutation of anti-cancer genes such as p-53 genes, BRA gene, and the BAX genes; all of which can happen due to stress increase that and environmental exposures (smoking, smog, teratogens, carcinogens).

i can only assume that being a teacher in the philippines-- especially in the rural communities-- where one is in charge of 40 or more students can be truly stressful. that and low pay pa gajod. indeed, it can be super stressful.

i remember a while back , the principal of one of the elementary schools in valencia was struck down with cancer. it was rather disheartening because the lady was still in her 40's (or was it in her early 50's) either way, still too young. she did pass away, God bless her soul! But she fought hard and to the end. she was beloved by the staff and her fellow teachers and students. makahilak gajod. :'(
