Today is the 144th birth anniversary of Vicente Sotto, the acclaimed Father of Cebuano Literature, Language, and Journalism. A staunch nationalist, he immortalized the Philippine Revolution and the Filipinos' war against the U.S. through his vernacular writings in various Cebuano newspaper. He advocated for freedom of speech and the press during the American period. When he became a Senator, he championed the Press Freedom Law (Republic Act No. 53) in then newly born Third Philippine Republic in 1946.
In 1961, during the birth centenary of Jose Rizal, he donated his 1888-1892 issues of La Solidaridad, the newsletter of the Reform Movement, to the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission (now the National Historical Commission of the Philippines). It is now housed in the Museo ni Marcelo H. Del Pilar in Bulakan, Bulacan. The said copy is biggest intact collection of the newsletter owned by the government.
