In 2019, I distinctly remember, I asked Secretary Art Tugade how he manages to crack jokes, smile, and work nonstop even if we know he also has some personal issues and problems deep inside.
His answer struck me:
“I try to conquer my problems. I do not allow my problems to conquer me. I subdue them.”
And then he added:
“Hope, I am telling you this because this must also be your attitude. Itatak mo ‘yan sa isip mo.”
Natigilan ako. Nag-isip sandali.
Then, I realized how fortunate I am to be mentored by this great man and leader. Huhubugin ka n’ya. Huhulmahin ka n’ya para gumaling at tumatag ka.
Sec. Art is not only decisive and iron-willed; he truly carries the onus of leadership by guiding and mentoring his subordinates in career and in life.
Parang tatay.
He likens career advancement to ancient Rome’s gladiator tournaments. He believes that one’s culture, values, and ways of doing things determine a person’s rise through the hierarchy.
“When I give you seeming difficulties, it is because I want you to become a corporate gladiator. And one thing I do in making you a corporate gladiator is inculcate in you practice, tolerance, the ABILITY TO WITHSTAND PAIN, the ability to be creative, and the ability to be innovative in order to survive,” he said.
Iba rin ang sipag ng taong ‘to— walang tawad ang dedikasyon at commitment sa paglilingkod sa bayan. ‘Yung mahihiya ka mapagod dahil siya, kahit 75 years old na, hindi tumitigil at mukhang hindi napapagod kumayod.
Kami na nga lang ang umaawat. May pandemic eh. Kaya lang, sabi n’ya, “COVID must not stop us from doing our jobs, our commitment to the public.”
Kaya kaming mga tao nya, takot na magkamali.
Takot, hindi lang dahil siguradong mapapagalitan kami kung magkamali, kundi dahil ayaw namin syang biguin. Ayaw naming malagay sya sa alanganin dahil alam namin kung ano ang mga hirap at sakripisyo nya sa pagpapatakbo ng DOTr.
Speaking of pagtakbo, sa mga gustong magtanong kay Sec. Tugade kung tatakbo ba sya, ‘wag n’yo na pong ituloy.
Uunahan ko na kayo. Ito po ang laging sagot n’ya— “Ang pag-usapan natin ngayon eh ‘yung mga proyekto. HINDI NAMAN AKO NILAGAY DITO PARA TUMAKBO. Nilagay ako dito para gawin ang trabaho ko para sa bayan at para sa tao.”
