Metro Manila has been deemed slightly less preferable this year in terms of providing the best quality of life to Asians working abroad, a report released yesterday showed.
The Philippine capital’s ranking slipped one notch to 25th among 49 Asian cities, with Depensar, Indonesia overtaking it in ECA International’s latest Location Ratings for expatriate living conditions.
At the same time, compared to over 254 cities in the world, Metro Manila ranked in the middle-third as the 142nd best destination for Asian expatriates. Last year, the city placed 138th.
Firms reportedly value this data as it guides them in computing locational allowances, ECA International said, noting that 70% of companies pay higher allowances to compensate for difficulties associated with adapting to a new environment.
Comparisons
Asians assigned abroad would be better off working in Singapore, the consistent top placer in the annual ranking which compares living standard indicators such as climate, health services, housing and utilities, social network and leisure facilities, infrastructure, personal safety, political tensions, differences in culture, distance from home and air quality.
"Singapore’s high quality infrastructure and health facilities, combined with low health risks, air pollution, crime rates and a cosmopolitan population help make the city an easy place for Asian assignees to live in," Lee Quane, Regional Director, Asia, ECA International, said in a statement yesterday.
Metro Manila remains out-ranked also by certain cities in Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, Brunei, and Vietnam in this regard, according to the report.
It places higher, however, than several cities in India, Laos, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, North Korea and Afghanistan.
