Cabrera, RP envoy to Myanmar, passes away

MANILA, Philippines - Former Press Secretary Noel Cabrera, the Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar, passed away Thursday morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. He was 64.
In a text message to reporters, DFA spokesman Eduardo Malaya said Cabrera passed away in Manila after a "brief illness," which the department has yet to confirm.
"Ambassador Cabrera last served as Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar, where he was at the forefront of the Philippines' constructive engagement with the military-led state and the cultivation of friendship with the Myanmarese people," Malaya said.
Cabrera previously served as Philippine Ambassador to Romania. Prior to that, he was press secretary in the Arroyo administration.
"DFA Secretary Alberto G. Romulo and the men and women of the foreign service convey their deepest condolences and prayers to Cecilia and the family of Ambassador Cabrera," Malaya said.
"He represented and served his country and people with competence and distinction," added the DFA spokesman.
Before joining government service, Cabrera was a full-time newspaperman.
Cabrera was Editor in Chief and Chief Operating Officer of the defunct Manila Chronicle from l993 to 1998. After his stint with the Manila Chronicle, he was appointed Press Undersecretary at the Office of the Press Secretary in Malacañang in l998.
Cabrera started his journalism career as special events reporter of the Philippines Daily Express where he later became a deskman, columnist, chief editorial writer, editorial page editor and assistant managing editor. He worked with the Express from l976 to l986.
Shortly before the first EDSA People Power in l986, he became the managing editor of the newly-revived Manila Times. After his brief stint at the Manila Times, he moved to the Manila Chronicle on the same year where he became the paper’s news editor and later as managing editor.
From l989 to l993, Cabrera worked as columnist and editorial writer of the Manila Times, Philippines Newsday and The Daily Globe.
Cabrera finished his AB in Journalism at the University of the Philippines in l969. He took his elementary and high school at the Ateneo de Manila.
The Press Secretary was a grantee of the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for Journalists at the University of Michigan, USA, l982-l983.
He was also a participant of the Nihon Shimbun Kyokai fellowship for journalists in Japan, in l980 as a fellow of the Confederation of Asean Journalists.
Cabrera was a Catholic Mass Media Awardee in l979.
A native of Taal, Batangas, Cabrera is married to Cecilia Maigue and has four children. - GMANews.TV
